Historic streets of San Antonio will be graced by Hollywood soon, with the filming of “1923,” a prequel to the popular series “Yellowstone.” Slated to start filming on September 23 downtown, the series’ choice of San Antonio could provide a vital boost to the city’s film scene.

The conversations of filming in San Antonio began in January. The production team of the popular drama series paid several visits, examining various locations within the city. San Antonio’s department of arts and culture executives happily showed them the mansions, streetscapes, and different pockets in the city.
The team specifically selected streets around Broadway as they were in search of authentic structures from the 1920s. San Antonio’s respect for historic preservation came as a significant advantage, providing the series with a realistic backdrop for its plot set in the Great Depression and Prohibition era.
Filming Impact on the City
The commencement of filming won’t be just a spectacle point for the city; it is expected to be an economic boost. According to Krystal Jones, the city’s department of arts and culture director, the process will benefit several local industries. She explained how filming requires hotel bookings, catering services, and triggers spending in local restaurants and entertainment spots after a day’s shoot.
“This is a big win, not only for the film industry, but it’s a big win for San Antonio,” Jones enthused.
Other Film Projects in San Antonio
This isn’t San Antonio’s first introduction to major film productions. Another noteworthy project filmed in the city is a romantic comedy, “Say A Little Prayer,” starring Luis Fonsi. Its plot revolves around three women living in San Antonio and their romantic dilemmas.
Filmed over a period of seven years, the city almost serves as a main character in the narrative. Iconic locales such as La Villita Historic Village and several art galleries grace the film, providing residents a chance to spot familiar places on the big screen. The film has recently secured a deal with AMC Theatres for a limited release, further pushing the city into the spotlight.

“You’re going to be able to see this film and say, ‘That is my beautiful city on film, and I know exactly where that is,'” Jones said. San Antonio’s cinematic appeal is likely to pique the interest of more filmmakers in the future.
