Trial Begins for Man Accused in 2022 Fatal Shooting of 16-Year-Old Girl
San Antonio – The trial of Nathaniel Melendez, a 21-year-old man accused of fatally shooting a teenager at an apartment party in 2022, commenced on Monday. Melendez is charged with the murder of Evelyn Gumbardo, who was just 16 years old at the time of her death.
Incident Details
The tragic events unfolded in the early hours of July 5, 2022, when police responded to a shooting at an apartment complex near Ingram Road. Upon their arrival, officers discovered three teenagers had suffered gunshot wounds: Daniel Valdez and Catalina Farias, both 18, along with Gumbardo. The two girls were found outside the apartment and were in critical condition; unfortunately, Gumbardo later succumbed to her injuries.
Witness Accounts
Farias later identified Melendez as the shooter, which led to his arrest just hours after the tragedy. In court, prosecutor Jonathan Alvarado outlined the events leading to the shooting, stating that Gumbardo and Farias had noticed Melendez behaving oddly before the attack. Alvarado contended that Melendez appeared to be under the influence when he began shooting without any justification.
Defense Arguments
In contrast, defense attorney Ron Ross acknowledged that Melendez was responsible for the shooting but argued that the prosecution would struggle to prove he intended to kill anyone. According to Ross, “Awareness is a crucial factor. We believe the evidence will show that he did not intentionally or knowingly cause this death.”
Potential Sentencing
If found guilty, Melendez could face a sentence of up to life in prison. The trial is set to continue on Tuesday in the 379th District Court.
