Concerns Rise Over Bullets Found in San Antonio Schools

San Antonio is on high alert after a series of unsettling discoveries involving ammunition at two local school districts. Over the past few days, residents have been shaken by reports of bullets turning up in unexpected places, raising serious questions about student safety and the origins of these dangerous items.

The Disturbing Discoveries

In just two days, one bullet was found at the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD, and a whopping thirteen bullets were discovered in the Northside Independent School District (NISD). Thankfully, officials have confirmed that no shootings occurred in connection with these finds. But parents can’t help but feel uneasy about how the bullets got there and who may be responsible.

A Student Takes Action

Things kicked off Thursday morning when a student from Clemens High School found a bullet in a boy’s restroom and immediately reported it to a School Resource Officer (SRO). In a proactive effort to ensure safety, the East Central ISD called in a K9 unit to investigate but thankfully found no traces of gunpowder or any additional threats.

Schertz Police Chief, Jim Lowery, acknowledged the importance of the student’s quick action, saying, “We want to thank the student that reported this incident. However, we would like to remind everyone to use the proper channels to report a situation that requires immediate attention.” He also emphasized that inaccurate or unexplained footage – like a viral TikTok video that had been circulating – can lead to unnecessary panic in the community.

Parents Share Their Fears

Meanwhile, at Jefferson Middle School in NISD, things took an even more alarming turn. On Wednesday, a Ziploc bag containing 11 rounds of ammunition was found by students walking home from school. “They saw a bag of bullets on the floor and they started screaming,” recounted a concerned mother. She shared her daughter’s fears, saying, “She said, ‘Mom I’m scared of going to school tomorrow.'” Like a lot of parents these days, her concern is palpable.

The troubling series of events started earlier that same day when a student uncovered a bullet outside a school door. This alarming pattern continued when another bullet was reported Thursday morning. These bullets varied in caliber, with some being 9mm and others 45 ACP. What’s troubling is that despite thorough searches and checks on surveillance cameras, NISD officials couldn’t pinpoint how the ammo made its way onto the school grounds.

The Uncertainty Lingers

In an email sent to parents, Principal Monica Cabico stated, “We have not been able to determine how or why the bullets were on our campus grounds.” She reassured families that school officials are taking this matter seriously and will continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure safety. Parents like the worried mother I spoke with, however, are left wondering if enough is being done. “We live in very scary times. How can we send our kids to school and feel safe?” she asked.

What’s Next?

The idea of increased security measures is now at the forefront of discussion among parents. Some suggest it may be time to check backpacks or even consider clear bags for students. “Do we need to have clear backpacks in the middle school now?” the mother voiced her concerns. It raises a valid question; what other precautions might be necessary to ensure a secure learning environment?

Principal Cabico ended her email by encouraging families to report any potential threats, reminding them of the district’s Safeline, where they can communicate any safety issues. The reality is stark: if a student brings a weapon to school, they will face severe consequences, including expulsion.

As San Antonio grapples with this unsettling situation, the community hopes that officials can get to the bottom of the bullet discoveries soon. Everyone wants to feel secure in their schools, and right now, that feeling seems to be slipping away.
