San Antonio’s Own Romantic Comedy: “Say A Little Prayer” Hits Theaters!
San Antonio, get ready for a big dose of love and laughter! The romantic comedy “Say A Little Prayer” is making its way to select theaters this Friday, Nov. 22. The film, shot against the stunning backdrop of the Alamo City, promises a delightful journey filled with friendship, romance, and what can only be described as a sprinkle of divine intervention.
The Beautiful Beginning
The birth of this charming film comes from an unexpected yet divine twist. The writer and producer, Nancy De Los Santos, initially set out to create a stage show celebrating San Antonio’s rich culture for its 2018 tricentennial. During her journey, she met Rebeca Barrera, a local educator with deep ties to the city. It was a casual conversation that sparked the idea to shift her script from Chicago to San Antonio, and just like that, the stars aligned! De Los Santos shared, “And a light bulb went off in my head. I’m supposed to be doing the movie here [in San Antonio].”
Meet The Stars
This delightful rom-com features some fantastic actors, including the Puerto Rican heartthrob Luis Fonsi, who’s stepping into his first major film role. Joining him are a trio of fabulous ladies: Vannessa Vásquez, as Adela, Jackie Cruz, as Ruby, and Vivian Lamolli, playing Cristina. Together, they form a band of best friends navigating the ups and downs of love in the beautiful city of San Antonio.
When our leading ladies find themselves disappointed in love, they turn to their faith and recite a prayer to St. Anthony, the patron saint of lost items and lost love. Enter Fonsi’s character, Rafael, an art curator, and just like that, hearts begin to flutter!
Real Stories, Real Representation
One of the film’s standout aspects is its commitment to showcasing authentic Latino voices and stories. De Los Santos emphasizes how important it is to represent a vibrant array of Latina experiences, noting the diversity within the cast. As she explains, they have characters that reflect Mexican-American, Dominican-American, and Black-Latina backgrounds. That’s not just diversity, that’s celebrating the unique soul of their community!
Sparking Inspiration
Interestingly enough, the film had a different title at first. Nancy originally called it “The Answer to My Prayer,” but as production progressed, that title felt a tad too serious. With a little help, the title evolved to “Say A Little Prayer,” making it catchy while still nodding to its roots.
Musical Moments
And wait until you hear the music! Fonsi, being the talented musician that he is, wrote a special song for the film titled “Prayer in Your Eyes”. Recorded in a lightning-fast twelve hours with a bit of help from songwriter Josh Kear, this ballad is sure to tug at your heartstrings.
Filming in San Antonio
Delightfully, the film showcases various local landmarks—from the beautiful River Walk to specific spots that reflect the culture and feel of San Antonio. One particularly touching moment came when they shot at a home filled with memories, allowing the crew to weave in real-life storytelling.
