Surge in Gun Violence Rocks San Antonio: Community Calls for Action

San Antonio has seen a disturbing increase in gun violence over the past few weeks, with several incidents leaving individuals injured and the community on edge. These recent events are sparking conversations about safety and the need for proactive measures in the city.

Shooting at Apartment Complex

In a troubling incident reported just from Monday afternoon, a man was wounded in a shooting at an apartment complex located near the Medical Center area. The chaos erupted around 5:35 p.m. when two men were sitting in a car parked along Cinnamon Creek Drive and Hamilton Wolfe. In a moment of rash decision-making, one individual shot the other in the leg before fleeing on foot.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital with what were thankfully deemed non-life-threatening injuries. As the police collected details, they faced a challenge in making progress with the case due to a language barrier with the victim. Authorities are working diligently to gather a complete account of the incident.

Teen Shot on the South Side

Another shocking incident occurred just before midnight on Sunday when a 17-year-old boy was shot in his lower body on the South Side of the city. This incident took place along Octavia Place, near South Flores Street, as the teenager was riding in a car with two friends. It escalated when another vehicle began tailing them.

As the boy was exiting his car, the suspects opened fire, hitting him multiple times. Thankfully, the teenager has been reported as being in stable condition following the attack. The suspects sped away in an SUV, and to date, no one has been apprehended.

Drive-By Shooting at Whataburger

Adding to the string of violence, a drive-by shooting erupted at a local Whataburger around 10 p.m. on Wednesday. The diner, located off Rittiman Road near Interstate 35, became the scene of chaos as two victims were caught in the crossfire.

A 19-year-old boy suffered an ankle injury while a 34-year-old woman was struck in the stomach by a ricocheting bullet. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a silver sedan open fire at the victims as they walked back to the restaurant after leaving a nearby bus stop. While the police launched an investigation, the shooter remains elusive.

Arrest Made in Murder Case

On a more somber note, authorities have arrested an 18-year-old named Daeveon Drew in connection with a first-degree murder case involving Herman Purvis, aged 51. The tragic shooting occurred at a residence in the East Side of San Antonio on June 10, 2023, where Purvis was found shot and later pronounced dead.

Drew is currently facing serious charges, and his bond has been set at $150,000. This case has raised significant concerns within the community regarding the ongoing gun violence and the need for stricter measures to prevent such tragic events in the future.

A Community in Need

As the city grapples with the rising tide of gun violence, residents and local leaders are actively discussing how best to address this pressing issue. The surge in shootings has instilled fear among San Antonio citizens, prompting many to call for urgent solutions and increased safety measures.

With these shocking incidents unfolding, the community remains hopeful for a swift resolution to the increasing violence and is united in the desire for a safer San Antonio.
