Fayette County 4-H Members Shine in San Antonio Livestock Show!

What’s new and exciting in Fayette County? Well, let me tell you about the thrilling weekend that took place on February 17 and 18, 2025, when a group of enthusiastic 4-H members put their skills to the test at the San Antonio Livestock Show’s Commercial Steer Contest. This annual showdown brings together the best and brightest young livestock handlers, and this year was no exception!

About 100 Commercial Steer Exhibitors competed in this lively contest, showcasing their knowledge, dedication, and, of course, their impressive livestock. A number of our Fayette County 4-H members took to the arena, giving it their all. Young competitors included Adalyn Carrales, Joseph Carrales, Crockett Guenther, and Gage Smrkovsky, all eager to show off their hard work and commitment.

Impressive Performances and Rankings

The competition was fierce, but our local stars held their own! Crockett Guenther showed remarkable skill and placed 12th in the contest, while Adalyn Carrales followed closely behind at 39th. Gage Smrkovsky and Joseph Carrales had strong showings as well, placing 43rd and 51st respectively. Although these rankings are solid, it’s the experience and lessons learned that hold even more value for these young 4-H members.

Rookie Speech Winner!

In an exciting twist, the contest wasn’t just about evaluating the animals. Public speaking also played a significant role. Gage Smrkovsky shone brightly during this segment, earning the title of Champion Rookie Speech Winner. This prestigious accolade highlights not just his public speaking prowess, but also the ability to connect his knowledge of livestock management with the audience. It’s a huge deal for a rookie!

The Contest Breakdown

The Commercial Steer Contest is an all-encompassing event that includes several important components that challenge the participants holistically. Competitors underwent a detailed process that started with weighing the steers to ensure they met necessary guidelines. Following that, there was an Ultrasound Evaluation that provided essential insights into the animals’ quality and health. But that’s not all!

The exhibitors were also evaluated on a Live Evaluation, which involves presenting their steers to judges who assess everything from appearance to behavior. To complement their hands-on work, each participant had a ***Recordbook*** to showcase their knowledge and management of their livestock throughout the year. Additionally, they faced a rigorous Beef Science Test designed to push their knowledge and critical thinking skills to new heights. Did we mention the Public Speaking Presentation? That’s right! Each of them had to deliver a presentation, sharing their insights and experiences with their steers. Talk about a jam-packed weekend!

Celebrating their Achievements

While the rankings by themselves are important, the friendships, experiences, and overall growth these 4-H members gain boost their confidence and love for agriculture. Through hard work, teamwork, and passion, these young individuals are preparing for bright futures in farm management, veterinary science, and related fields. They’re not just competitors; they are community leaders in the making.

So, hats off to the Fayette County 4-H members for their outstanding participation in the San Antonio Livestock Show! We can’t wait to see what they accomplish next time. Keep your eyes peeled, because these young stars have only just begun to shine!
