Firefighters responding to a fire incident in a home

News Summary

A San Antonio family narrowly avoided disaster when they were alerted to a fire in their home caused by a burning incense holder. The incident occurred shortly after the family returned from a movie, and thanks to their home security system, no injuries were reported. Meanwhile, an unrelated individual was arrested for attempted arson. This highlights the importance of fire safety and vigilance in households.

San Antonio Family Has Close Call After Incense Mishap

In a dramatic turn of events last Thursday night in San Antonio, a family had a narrow escape from disaster when they returned home to find their house filled with smoke and flames. The fire occurred in the 11400 block of Raindrop Drive, just as the family was enjoying a night out at the movies.

Incense Ignition Leads to Fire

Just before 10 p.m., the family got an alert from their Blink home security system, notifying them of smoke in their home. To their shock, they quickly realized that their incense holder, left burning on the tile floor, had caught fire. Fortunately, the family had the foresight to install a security system, which played a crucial role in alerting them to the danger before things escalated.

Firefighters arrived on the scene shortly after the family, managing to extinguish the fire swiftly. Thankfully, there was no serious damage reported to the home, and, most importantly, no injuries resulted from the incident. The family can breathe a sigh of relief after what could have been a much more catastrophic event.

A Second Fire Incident Raises More Concerns

South Navidad Street. This time, a group of three men returned home to find their space filled with smoke and flames, due to a cigarette left burning on a table. Again, luck was on everyone’s side as no injuries were reported in this second fire.

Arrests Made in Unrelated Fire Attempts

38-year-old man named Roger Ray Roel on charges related to multiple attempted arson fires in his own apartment. These incidents date back to November 10, when a neighbor reported seeing Roel purposely setting fire to his apartment’s door frame.

Remarkably, Roel returned to the door frame not just once but multiple times, igniting it on three separate occasions. Luckily, the flames extinguished themselves each time and did not spread to the surrounding structure. Thanks to the neighbor, who recorded the bizarre happenings on video, officials were alerted to the dangerous behavior.

Initially, when officers responded, they were unable to locate Roel. However, upon reviewing the footage the following day, the investigation took a more serious turn. Roel allegedly claimed that his intentions were tied to “incense” and “religious reasons,” yet investigators were not convinced. They found his actions suspicious, especially given the recurring nature of the fires.

On November 13, new video evidence surfaced, showing Roel trying to set fires yet again at his apartment. A later inspection on November 15 uncovered damages to the carpet, flooring, and stove—indications of significant fire hazard before the situation spiraled out of control.

Authorities ultimately arrested Roel on Monday, with his bond set at $75,000. With these twists and turns, the community certainly has had its share of fire-related scares recently.
