Hard Rock Band Tesla Discusses Songwriting and Beatles Influence Ahead of San Antonio Concert
San Antonio is gearing up to welcome the iconic hard rock group, Tesla, for a much-anticipated performance on June 5 at the Aztec Theatre. Known for their smash hits such as ‘Signs’ and ‘Modern Day Cowboy,’ Tesla promises to deliver an evening full of powerhouse songs and adrenaline-pumping energy.
The renowned California-based group arrived on the music scene in the late ’80s and were quickly associated with the ‘hair metal’ movement. However, as the band repeatedly clarified, their roots lie in the hard rock sounds of the previous decade.
Tesla and Their Everlasting Appeal
In a recent interview ahead of their San Antonio performance, the band’s bassist Brian Wheat reminisced about their early touring days with Def Leppard. “Def Leppard were like mentors and big brothers to us,” stated Wheat. The camaraderie between the bands has remained strong over the years, with lead vocalist Joe Elliott even penning the foreword to Wheat’s book.
However, the power of Tesla’s music lies in its intricate arrangements, which are evident in songs such as ‘Modern Day Cowboy,’ ‘Love Song,’ and ‘No Way Out (Heaven’s Trail).’ These tracks feature elegant riffs, distinctive sections and unconventional phrasings – aspects which Wheat attests are not the result of intentional design, but of their natural creative process.
Influences and Aspirations
Wheat cited Paul McCartney and The Beatles as significant musical influences. In fact, in a bold statement, Wheat said, “On the eighth day, God created Paul McCartney.” He further expressed his admiration for songs like “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey,” “Band on the Run,” and “Live and Let Die.”
When asked about the greatest Beatles albums, Wheat had no hesitation in naming ‘Revolver,’ ‘The White Album’ and ‘Let It Be.’ Calling ‘Revolver’ the greatest record ever made, he defended his choices passionately.
Unplugged Trend and Their Striped Down Hits
Released at a time when grunge was making its presence known, Tesla’s ‘Five Man Acoustical Jam’ arguably stands as the band’s outstanding achievement. Offering acoustic versions of Tesla’s original tracks and some of their favorite ’70s rock covers, the album set the stage for the unplugged trend that dominated the early ’90s. These stripped-down versions are a testament to the band’s rich songwriting skills and musical versatility.
Ticket prices for the June 5 concert range from $64 to $193.50. With Tesla’s long-standing reputation of delivering rock and roll gems, it promises to be an event that echoes the words of their enduring hit ‘Signs’ – ‘Made up my mind to make a new start / Going to San Antonio with a guitar in my hand.’
