Congressman Joaquin Castro Eulogizes Tejano Legend Johnny Canales in U.S. House

San Antonio’s Congressman Honors the Late Texas TV Host

Last Friday, U.S. Representative Joaquin Castro, a Democrat from San Antonio, honored the passing of South Texas television host and Tejano music legend, Johnny Canales, on the U.S. House floor.

Joaquin Castro’s Tribute to Johnny Canales

Canales, who passed away last week at the age of 77, was famed for hosting The Johnny Canales Show, which uplifted Tex-Mex musicians like La Mafia, Jennifer Pena, and Los Tigres del Norte, bringing them to a larger audience. Based in Corpus Christi, Canales’ show gained considerable fame to eventually be syndicated internationally. It was the springboard that launched the illustrious career of the late Tejano legend, Selena.

“Johnny was a champion for civil rights, an advocate for veterans, and a musician in his own right,”

Congressman Castro stated during his heartfelt eulogy for the famously multi-faceted television personality, disc jockey, and band leader.

Influence on Latino Artists

As a previous chairperson of the Hispanic Congressional Caucus, Castro expressed the significance of Canales’ show in providing critical exposure for Latino artists. He holds a record of striving to increase the inclusion of Latin music in the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry.

“To his loyal fans, Johnny was best known for his catchphrase: ‘You got it. Take it away!’ — the words of encouragement he would share with all the performers who joined him on stage,” recounted Castro. “Johnny, you will always be remembered, especially among your loyal fans in South Texas.”

The congressman ended his eulogy with a sobering “Que descanse en paz, Johnny,” which translates to “Rest in peace, Johnny,” in English.

Legacy of Johnny Canales

Canales will be remembered for his significant efforts in promoting and accelerating the careers of many Latino artists. His show, The Johnny Canales Show, was not only a platform for aspiring Latin artists but also a ground-breaking contributor to the global recognition of Latin music.

Despite his passing, his influence and the trail he blazed for Latino artists will continue to reverberate in the Latino music industry.
