Major Construction Work Begins on Zarzamora Street in San Antonio

The city of San Antonio has initiated a major infrastructure project aimed at improving Zarzamora Street, scheduled to run through Winter 2025. This initiative will enhance pedestrian facilities, introduce wider sidewalks, and upgrade existing traffic signals all along the corridor. Demarcated zones will be created to streamline this massive undertaking and to limit any inconvenience to regular traffic and pedestrians.

Details on Construction Zones and Project Progress

The enormous stretch of Zarzamora Street, spanning between Fredericksburg Road and SW Military Drive, will not be entirely under construction simultaneously to keep the work manageable and minimize disruption. Initial work will focus on specific intersections i.e., Stonewall, Buena Vista, and Mayfield. Future construction zones will be announced as the project progresses. As of now, there are no lane closures, but some should be anticipated in future stages of this project.

Enhancement of Public Amenities

As part of the project, the city aims to significantly enhance various pedestrian amenities along Zarzamora Street. Apart from widening the sidewalks, the enhancement will presumably focus on improving crosswalks, pedestrian signals, and public benches. Bus facilities will also be upgraded to meet the needs of the commuting public and provide seating areas and shade structures for those waiting for buses.

Expected Impact on Traffic

Although there are currently no lane closures due to the project, it is expected that certain sections of Zarzamora Street will face temporary disruptions as the project progresses. The city is making efforts to ensure a minimum impact on the traffic flow by scheduling the work in segmented phases. Motorists and pedestrians are urged to remain alert, adhere to all posted signs and detours, and exercise caution when traveling through or near the construction zones.

Funding for the Project

The city has not disclosed specific details about the project’s funding, but it was mentioned earlier that a federal grant would be utilized for improving Zarzamora Street crosswalks. The city of San Antonio acknowledges the necessity of this project as it aligns with their commitment to providing accessible, safe transportation infrastructure for its residents.
