Volunteers Urgently Needed for Inner City Youth Ministry in San Antonio

San Antonio is home to many vibrant communities, but some areas face significant challenges. Harper’s Chapel Ministries, located on the West Side, is reaching out to the community in search of volunteers to help with their impactful youth programs.

Growing Demand for Youth Support

Over the past year, the after-school program at Harper’s Chapel has seen impressive growth. Starting with just a handful of children, the program now supports around 40 kids weekly. This change has created a greater demand for volunteers who can provide mentorship, tutoring, and emotional support to these children.

Meet Hanna Zertuche

Hanna Zertuche initially joined Harper’s Chapel as a volunteer to help address the community’s needs. Now a full-time staff member, she has taken on the role of coordinating volunteers and programs. “I love these kids more than anything. And, I love them as if they’re my own,” Zertuche shared, highlighting the deep connections volunteers can form with the children.

Why Volunteer?

The ministry’s mission goes beyond just educational support. “There’s a ministry in presence,” Zertuche emphasized, stressing the importance of being there for the kids. Simple gestures like asking, “How was your day?,” can make a world of difference. Volunteers can provide mentorship and a listening ear, which are incredibly valuable to the youth in this community.

How to Get Involved

Harper’s Chapel is specifically looking for retirees, counselors, and college students who might benefit from volunteer hours. If you’re interested in making a positive impact, you can visit harperscbc.com to sign up as a volunteer. Additionally, the ministry has an Amazon Wish List for after-school supplies that you can contribute to.

Upcoming Community Initiatives

Harper’s Chapel Ministries is also participating in The Big Give SA, a fundraising initiative that runs from September 11-18. This event aims to encourage donations and support from the community, which will further enhance the resources available for the children.

In a community where every bit of help counts, the need for volunteers at Harper’s Chapel is urgent. Your time and effort can create lasting change in the lives of these children, helping to build a brighter future for the community.
