San Antonio Gets Ready for a Taco Takeover!

Hey there, San Antonio! Grab your taco-loving friends because it looks like we’re on the brink of a major taco explosion across the U.S. That’s right, our favorite Tex-Mex chains are gearing up to take their delicious offerings nationwide. A recent article took a peek into the world of Mexican chain restaurants and discovered that out of 12 chains about to hit the broader market, a whopping seven hail from our beloved Texas, with five of them dedicated to tacos!

Big Names Set for Expansion

Let’s kick things off with Chuy’s, that iconic Tex-Mex restaurant born right in Austin back in 1982. Chuy’s is known for serving up authentic Tex-Mex goodness in a colorful and quirky setting. With their current roster of 101 locations across 15 states, they’re getting even bigger thanks to their recent acquisition by Darden Restaurants, the company behind Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse. Can you say more Chuy’s for everyone?

Then there’s Fajita Pete’s, a savory gem hailing from Houston. This eatery, which specializes in juicy fajitas with an impressive choice of chicken, pork, beef, or shrimp, has 30 locations sprinkled throughout Texas and a few other states too. They’re bustling with business, and with their strong franchising program, new locations are on the way, including their latest addition in Austin!

Next up, we have Fuzzy’s Taco Shop. Originating in Fort Worth in 2001, Fuzzy’s is loved for its Baja-style Mexican fare. They’ve got everything from breakfast burritos to tasty tacos and even a full bar! With over 150 spots across 17 states, they’re planning to expand even further after being acquired by Dine Brands, which means we can expect more Fuzzy’s locations soon!

Taco Cabana and Beyond

Of course, no taco discussion is complete without mentioning Taco Cabana. This fast-casual favorite, also from San Antonio, has been serving up tacos, burritos, and refreshing margaritas since the ’70s. After their acquisition by Yadav Enterprises, we can look forward to a streamlined experience with better drive-thrus and a snappier take-out process. Yum!

For those craving something more authentic, Taco Palenque, founded in Laredo in 1987, is eyeing expansion outside of Texas. They’re known for their soft and crispy tacos, enchiladas, and chicken mole that brings the true taste of Mexico to the table.

Then there’s Torchy’s Tacos, which started out as just a humble taco truck in Austin back in 2006. Fast forward to now, and they boast 125 locations across 14 states! Their tacos and queso are fan favorites, and they have no plans of slowing down on their menu innovations, recently rolling out some exciting new items.

Last but certainly not least, we have Velvet Taco. This unique taco spot began in Dallas in 2011 and has grown to nearly 50 locations. They’re not just any taco shop—they offer creative mashups like chicken and waffle tacos! Expansion plans are also in the works, including some new spots at airports. Taco lovers unite!

Outside Taco News

Now, it’s not just tacos taking center stage in San Antonio; several new eateries and entertainment spots are popping up, while a few are sadly closing their doors. Rooster Crow Bakery, run by the 2024 Tastemaker Awards Pastry Chef of the Year, is closing after almost two years of delicious memories. Meanwhile, a new bar called Neon Moon Saloon has recently opened and promises to serve fun vibes with a mix of karaoke and live music.

As we gear up for this taco boom and explore exciting new venues in our city, the tantalizing aroma of Tex-Mex delights is sure to make San Antonio even more delicious! So whether you’re a taco fanatic, a foodie, or just someone looking to indulge, keep your eyes peeled for these fabulous restaurants popping up across town!
