San Antonio Comes Together for Wounded Veterans at the 7th Annual Carry Forward 5K

A Day of Honor and Unity

On a warm Saturday morning, the beautiful green fields of Mission County Park in San Antonio buzzed with excitement as more than 2,000 participants, from young kids to seasoned veterans, laced up their sneakers to take part in the 7th Annual Carry Forward 5K. This year’s event wasn’t just another run; it was a heartfelt way to raise funds and honor the brave service of our wounded veterans and their families.

The Meaning Behind the Event

As everyone gathered at the park, it was clear that this wasn’t just about crossing a finish line. Participants had the option to carry a flag, shoulder weights ranging from one to a hefty 100 pounds, or even help carry another person along the course. Each choice was a touching representation of the burdens our veterans carry long after their service has ended.

Community Spirit on Full Display

The atmosphere was electric with community spirit, as friends, families, and even furry companions came together to support a noble cause. “The effects of war or military service on wounded warriors can last a lifetime,” said Angela Hemmen of the Wounded Warrior Project. “Carry Forward is an inspiring and fun opportunity for participants to show their support for our heroes and their families.” Her sentiments lingered in the air as echoes of laughter, cheers, and motivational words filled the park.

A Virtual Option for All

For those unable to attend in person, the foundation graciously offered a Carry Forward Virtual 5K. This flexibility allowed even more people to participate, ensuring that the spirit of the event stretched far beyond just those present at the park. It emphasized how important it is to keep our wounded warriors in our thoughts and hearts, regardless of our physical location.

Making a Difference Together

Participants were encouraged to raise funds ahead of time, either through sponsorship or by sending out donation links to friends and loved ones. This collective effort turned into a powerful reminder of the impact we can make when we come together for a common cause. Donations can still be made on the Wounded Warrior Project’s website, making it easy for anyone to contribute even if they couldn’t join the festivities.

Looking to the Future

The energy and enthusiasm at the Carry Forward 5K not only celebrated our veterans but also aimed to empower them in practical ways. The money raised from the event goes directly to programs designed to assist veterans and their families in navigating life after service. Participants left with a sense of accomplishment, knowing they had helped make a tangible difference.

Every Step Counts

The event was a success, not just in terms of participation numbers but also in its emotional resonance. It shone a light on the ongoing needs of our veterans and underscored that San Antonio is a city that stands behind them. With each flag carried and each weight lifted, participants communicated that our heroes are not forgotten and that their sacrifices continue to inspire action.

Gratitude and Awe

As the day wrapped up and participants enjoyed cold drinks beneath the shade of trees, reflections of pride and gratitude filled the space. The Carry Forward 5K redefined community involvement, illustrating that even a single step can carry the weight of a nation’s appreciation for its warriors. With each year, the event grows stronger, a testament to the strength of unity and the power of empathy.

So here’s to San Antonio, its residents, and everyone who came out to support our wounded veterans—you truly make a difference. Together, we carry the forward legacy of those who have served, and together, we will continue to uplift them.
