San Antonio Celebrates Taco Triumphs and New Food Ventures

San Antonio, a city proud of its rich culinary scene, is buzzing with excitement after the recent announcement of Texas Monthly’s coveted list of the 50 Best Tacos in Texas. This list has ignited friendly debates around town, proving that while the Texas football rivalry captures the state’s heart, discussions about food are a close second. It’s a spicy subject that everyone has an opinion on!

A Taco Lover’s Dream

At the center of this newfound taco fame is Leo Davila from Stix & Stone, whose creation—the Big Red and barbacoa taco flight—landed at No. 8 on the prestigious list. Taco editor José Ralat, who has been scouting Texas for taco excellence since 2019, called Davila’s dish “groundbreaking.” Imagine this: it features Alamo City’s iconic Big Red soda ingeniously woven into masa and paired with a delightful strawberry jam. Talk about a flavor explosion!

San Antonio didn’t stop there; it secured 10 spots on the full list, showcasing a mix of classic taquerias and innovative newcomers. This shows just how vibrant and dynamic the San Antonio taco scene is, and the pride local chefs take in their culinary creations. Ralat traveled an amazing 14,000 miles across Texas, tasting his way from Amarillo to Brownsville, making it clear that our city truly stands out.

Other Taco Hot Spots

If you’re thinking San Antonio has the taco game all wrapped up, other cities have something to say about that! Austin gave us eight entries, highlighted by the tasty contender, Nixta Taqueria, at No. 10. Meanwhile, Houston came in with five contenders, featuring Azteca Taco House, which nabbed No. 3, and Dallas kept pace with five spots as well, with Revolver Taco Lounge sitting pretty at No. 4. The top honor, however, went to Ana Liz Taqueria in Mission, recognized for an extraordinary deconstructed chile relleno taco crafted by Ana Liz Pulido, a proud winner of the prestigious James Beard Award for Best Chef: Texas.

New Ventures by a Social Media Star

Shifting gears to another exciting development within the Alamo City, food fans are gearing up for a new venture from none other than social media sensation turned boxer, Jake Paul. On October 17, Paul announced a partnership with the popular restaurant group, Dog Haus. As a board member, franchise owner, and advisor, he’s set to open 25 locations across the U.S., four of which will be in Texas, including one in San Antonio.

For those unfamiliar, Dog Haus is a sports bar concept that serves a diverse menu, primarily focusing on hot dogs and beer but also featuring plant-based options and a variety of pub grub. It’s an inviting setup that many locals already cherish, with the existing locations at 20907 Stone Oak Pkwy and the temporarily closed one at 11710 Quincy Lee Dr.

Date to Remember

As the city prepares for these new locations, they also gear up for Paul’s “Fight of the Century” against boxing legend Mike Tyson set for November 15 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. All Dog Haus locations plan to air this much-anticipated fight, creating an electrifying atmosphere. Paul expresses his excitement, saying, “I’m all in. I’ve been a fan of Dog Haus for years and I’m fired up to push the limits and help take this amazing brand to a whole new level.”

In summary, San Antonio’s culinary scene is thriving, with tacos taking center stage and new food ventures promising vibrant dining experiences. Whether you’re indulging in the best tacos in Texas or preparing to celebrate at Dog Haus, there’s no shortage of deliciousness in the Alamo City!
