San Antonio Comes Together for Little Camila’s Life-Saving Liver Transplant
In a heartwarming turn of events, the city of San Antonio has rallied together to save the life of a precious two-year-old girl, Camila Yamilet Richardson. Just a few weeks ago, Camila was fighting for her life, in desperate need of a living liver donor. With the community’s incredible response, a miracle unfolded that has brought hope and joy to many.

It all began when a state employee realized the urgency of Camila’s situation. This brave individual understood that the message about her need for a living liver donor must reach further than just state employees. A call to action was broadcasted, urging anyone who could help to come forward. With 57 wonderful volunteers stepping up, the community showed just how powerful collective action can be.
The Medical Perspective
Dr. Naveen Mittal, the medical director for pediatric liver transplant at the University Health Transplant Institute, described Camila’s condition as extremely critical. “This is one of the sickest children I’ve ever taken care of. No doubt about it,” he expressed. His words highlighted the dire need for immediate measures, and thanks to the community’s response, a suitable liver was located just in time.
The Life-Saving Surgery
On Tuesday night, Camila underwent a complicated surgery that lasted more than eight hours. Dr. Mittal vividly described the procedure, beginning with the removal of Camila’s failing liver. “Removing the sick liver is a very serious procedure because a child without a functioning liver is in danger,” he explained. Once the damaged liver was removed, a piece of liver from the donor was carefully placed in its place. This new liver came complete with its own blood vessels and bile ducts, which needed to be meticulously connected to Camila’s existing systems.

Meanwhile, Camila’s mother, Jessica Richardson, waited anxiously outside the operating room. She had been told her daughter had only days to live and was ready to donate part of her own liver, but unfortunately, that was not possible. When the surgery finally concluded, and the doctors started connecting arteries and veins, a miraculous transformation began. “The liver suddenly turns pink, instead of looking gray, it now has blood flowing through it,” Dr. Mittal noted with excitement.

Jessica observed what she described as a miraculous transformation in her daughter. “The color of her skin was yellow before, and now she is brown. Her eyes were yellow, and now they are white. It has been a huge change,” she said, overflowing with gratitude.

Now, mother and daughter will remain in the hospital for another month as Camila continues her recovery. Jessica shared her relief, stating, “I am so happy, and thanks to everyone, my daughter had her transplant. She will be able to live more, and I am the happiest mother.”
