Construction Updates for Loop 1604/I-10 Interchange in San Antonio!

San Antonio, get ready for the holiday season with some important news about the construction happening at the Loop 1604 and I-10 interchange. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has just released its holiday construction schedule, and we have all the details so you can plan your travels accordingly.

What to Expect

From now until the end of the year, there will be one major closure and two minor closures in the Loop 1604/I-10 area. Let’s break it down:

  • Major Closure: Mark your calendars for the weekend of November 15 through 18. During this weekend, expect one or more highways to be closed in both directions for an extended period. Not only that, but some of the ramps may also be closed.
  • Minor Closures: There will be lane and ramp closures during the weekends of November 8 through 11 and November 22 through 25. One highway may be closed in only one direction, and don’t be surprised if you come across more extensive overnight closures.

Good news for all the holiday shoppers out there: even during these closures, access to businesses will remain open! And for those concerned about traffic, worry not! Law enforcement will be on site to assist with traffic flow at intersections, ensuring you can get to where you need to go.

When Are We Done?

If you’re hoping for smooth sailing after the month of November, you’re in luck! From November 27 to the end of the year, TxDOT has announced that there won’t be any closures in the area. So, if you’re planning any last-minute holiday trips or family visits, you should have no trouble navigating.

Progress on the Loop 1604 Expansion Project

Since January 2024, construction crews have been hard at work installing flyover ramps at the Loop 1604/I-10 interchange, and it looks like they’ve made great strides! According to TxDOT, the steel beam work is 73% complete, with an impressive 110 beams already in place.

This is all part of the larger Loop 1604 Expansion Project, aimed at reducing road congestion over a stretch of 23 miles along Loop 1604 from SH 16 (Bandera Rd.) to I-35. With a whopping $1.4 billion budget in the mix, this project includes:

  • Expanding the mainlanes from a cozy four lanes to a whopping ten-lane expressway
  • Adding HOV (high-occupancy vehicle) lanes
  • Creating a multi-level interchange at I-10
  • Implementing a new innovative intersection at Blanco Rd.
  • Improving bicycle and pedestrian accommodations along the frontage roads

What’s Next?

As exciting as this construction is, we understand it can be a bit of a hassle when you’re trying to get places. But hang tight, folks! This project is designed to help ease traffic woes in the long run, making travel smoother and safer for everyone. Detailed information about the upcoming closures will be released the week of each closure, so keep your eyes open and stay informed!

Happy travels, San Antonio! We hope you enjoy the upcoming holiday season while the roads get a much-needed upgrade. Remember, be safe, plan ahead, and don’t let the construction put a damper on your cheer!
