With a significant spike in demand for flights, the city is buzzing with excitement as plans for a $2.5 billion airport expansion are well underway. That’s right, folks! As San Antonio International Airport (SAT) ramps up its operations, travelers are flooding in, making this airport the talk of the town.
Record-Breaking Passenger Counts
From January to September of this year, nearly 8.2 million passengers have traveled through SAT. That’s a jaw-dropping 5% increase compared to what was already an amazing year for the airport back in 2023! Just last month in September alone, SAT welcomed over 862,000 passengers, which set a record for that particular month. Can you believe it? This kind of growth highlights the undeniable need for more airport capacity!
Domestic and International Traffic Rising
As the demand for air travel surges, we’re seeing substantial growth in both domestic and international traffic. In fact, the domestic passenger count has soared past 7.6 million, marking a fabulous 4.2% increase over the previous year. Meanwhile, the international side of things is shining even brighter with over 530,000 travelers making their way through SAT—an impressive 19.4% hike compared to this time last year!
Airlines Taking Notice
Big-name airlines are paying close attention to these flourishing numbers. Delta Air Lines is ready to take flight with new nonstop routes from San Antonio to Boston, starting Nov. 11. Talk about expanding horizons! Additionally, American Airlines may also increase its market presence at SAT, as they have received tentative approval for a nonstop service to Reagan Washington National Airport, which could take off as early as February. The essence of travel is becoming more accessible for San Antonio, and that’s music to our ears!
A Promising Future Ahead
2023 is shaping up to be a record-breaking year, with close to 10.7 million ticket holders expected to pass through SAT’s gates. The momentum is real, with airlines like American, Spirit Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Viva Aerobus, and Volaris stepping up their flights to accommodate travelers.
