Adriana Rocha Garcia Announces Candidacy for San Antonio Mayor
District 4 Councilwoman Makes Her Mark
In San Antonio, the race for mayor is heating up as District 4 Councilwoman Adriana Rocha Garcia has officially declared her intent to run for mayor in the upcoming 2025 elections. This announcement, made during an exclusive interview, marks her as the first female candidate and the third council member to join the race.
A Passion for Public Service
Rocha Garcia, who has been representing San Antonio’s South Side, shared her motivation behind the decision to run. “Personally, I want to run because I want to help people,” she stated, emphasizing the significance of upcoming challenges for the city. The councilwoman plans to file the official paperwork next week, aiming to address pressing issues facing residents.
An Extensive Background in Local Government
Not only is Rocha Garcia a dedicated council member in her third term, but she also serves as an associate marketing professor at Our Lady of the Lake University. In her role on the city council, she chairs the Planning and Community Development Committee and is actively involved in several other committees, focusing on housing trust and community health initiatives.
“I’ve raised a child on my own. I’m a single mom. Imagine how many single moms are out there trying to get ahead,” she mentioned, resonating with many constituents who might feel underrepresented.
Challenges Ahead for San Antonio
During her interview, Rocha Garcia discussed the economic obstacles that San Antonio is currently facing, citing declines in city revenue from sales taxes and CPS Energy. She acknowledged the reality of potential federal funding decreases, which could impact city budgeting significantly.
However, she identified crime as the primary challenge. “whether it is increased or not, the perception alone of crime is enough to scare people,” she stated, highlighting the need for effective strategies to improve public safety.
A Pivotal Moment for the City
As the race shapes up, Rocha Garcia is the fourth candidate to announce, joining Councilman John Courage, Councilman Manny Pelaez, and tech entrepreneur Beto Altamirano. Notably, current Mayor Ron Nirenberg is terming out, making way for new leadership in a city at a turning point.
With conversations brewing around the election set for May 3, 2025, Adriana Rocha Garcia is positioning herself as a transformative candidate with a vision for a brighter future for San Antonio.
