Marc McGurren, a representative of Spotless Auto in San Antonio, revealed that recent market shifts have seen used car prices drop significantly. This situation provides consumers with better purchasing options for used cars.
Following widespread computer chip shortages and strikes among the United Auto Workers Union, the dealership sector had a hard time delivering new cars, leading to an increased demand for used cars. McGurren cites these events as catalysts towards a more accessible used car market, “We’re changing the prices every day to make sure we’re in line with the consumer demand and pricing that’s out there.”
National Reports Confirm Price Decline
Kelley Blue Book, a renowned vehicle valuation company, also reported a decline in wholesale used vehicle prices across the United States early this year, affirming McGurren’s claims. Spotless Auto representative added that despite the market being volatile, it’s starting to normalize. Consequently, this normalization is making used cars more affordable.
High Demand for Fuel-Efficient Cars
McGurren pointed out that the most sought-after vehicles currently are the fuel-efficient models priced under $30,000. The high demand posed a challenge in providing for consumers, further indicating the shifting dynamics of the used vehicle market.
Impact on Repair Shops
San Antonio repair shops are also feeling the effects of these economic shifts. Erik Garcia, a local auto repair shop owner, confirmed that it had been tough handling the price increases in auto parts during the pandemic. However, he has noticed an improvement in part availability, which is starting to stabilize the market.
“The price of oil shot up. Common stuff, like filters we keep on hand, started doubling. It’s starting to kind of level out now,” commented Garcia.
Future of the Used Car Market
As parts’ availability improves, more cars can hit the lot, potentially spiraling the costs downwards. McGurren remains optimistic about the future of the used car market in San Antonio, predicting that prices will keep dropping.
“I know without a doubt that they will continue to drop. How much I think it will be is fractional to what it was,” expressed McGurren
