Celebrate Life and Remembrance at Pearl’s Dia de los Muertos Festival
San Antonio is gearing up for another vibrant and heartfelt celebration as the annual Dia de los Muertos festival returns to the Pearl this weekend! Mark your calendars for November 2, when the festivities will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. This enchanting event promises a delightful blend of culture, art, and community, perfect for visitors of all ages.
What to Expect
When you step onto the Pearl grounds, you’ll be greeted by stunning ofrendas—altars adorned with offerings that honor the lives of loved ones who have passed away. The colorful Catrinas, elegant female skeleton figures often associated with Dia de los Muertos, will also make a striking appearance, celebrating the beauty of life and death.
What’s more, this year’s festival will shine a spotlight on the creativity of two talented local artists, Mauro de la Tierra and Regina Moya. Mauro is known for crafting impressive alebrijes—brightly painted sculptures of fantastical creatures made from recycled materials. Visitors will have the chance to admire two of his large creations on display!
Regina, on the other hand, is working on something truly unique this year: a tzompantli, or trophy rack, which historically showcased enemy skulls and served as an altar for gods in both Aztec and Mayan cultures. Regina’s rendition features 30 meticulously hand-painted skulls displayed prominently in the middle of the Pearl. This art piece is inspired by an actual aztec trophy rack discovered at Mexico City’s Templo Mayor in 2015, and it promises to be a captivating sight!
An Artistic Showcase
The festival doesn’t just highlight established artists; it also provides a platform for local young talent. Artwork from students at Hawthorne Academy will grace the Pearl as well. Under the guidance of teacher Lisa Dyer, students from Fine Arts classes have crafted beautiful pieces, including hand-painted sugar skulls. You can also find dazzling monarch Catrinas created by fellow educator Lou Rintala. Their artwork will be on display at the Pearl throughout the Dia de los Muertos festival, which runs until November 4.
Community Involvement
In addition to individual artistry, various groups will also present altars in the spirit of remembrance. The YWLA and the Mexican consulate will contribute, ensuring a sense of community and collaboration permeates this year’s festivities.

One highlight will be the Catrin and Catrina costume contest, offering a chance for attendees to show off their creative, festive outfits.
