Army Black Knights Narrowly Defeat UTSA Roadrunners in Thrilling 29-24 Showdown

West Point, NY: Army Black Knights Edge Out UTSA Roadrunners

The Army Black Knights triumphed over the University of Texas-San Antonio (UTSA) Roadrunners in a thrilling game at Michie Stadium on Saturday, securing a 29-24 victory in front of a vibrant crowd of 22,120 spectators. Army quarterback Bryson Daily led the charge, completing the game with an impressive 190 passing yards and 147 rushing yards, including two crucial touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

An Exciting Start to the Game

The Black Knights won the toss and quickly established dominance with a decisive 13-play, 75-yard scoring drive. Daily connected with wide receiver Tyrell Robinson on a 41-yard touchdown pass, kicking off the scoring at 7-0 with 7:30 left in the first quarter. The Roadrunners responded effectively as quarterback Owen McCown led a drive ending with running back Brandon High Jr.‘s touchdown, tying the game at 7-7 before the first quarter concluded.

Back-and-Forth Battle

As the second quarter progressed, both teams struggled to find momentum until Army’s Trey Gronotte kicked a 39-yard field goal, reclaiming the lead at 10-7 with just over five minutes until halftime. UTSA fought back, with McCown orchestrating a late drive that resulted in a 33-yard field goal from Tate Sandell, allowing the teams to head into halftime tied at 10-10.

Turning the Game Around

UTSA took its first lead of the game early in the second half with a 21-yard touchdown pass from McCown to Devin McCuin, pushing the score to 17-13. However, Army quickly countered with a 22-yard field goal from Gronotte, tightening the gap to 17-16.

The Final Quarter’s Drama

As the fourth quarter began, UTSA’s offense stumbled, handing over the ball on a failed fourth down attempt. Daily capitalized on the opportunity, scoring a one-yard touchdown run, putting Army ahead 22-17 after their two-point conversion attempt fell short.

With time dwindling, UTSA rallied. After a touchdown from High cut the Army lead to 29-24, the Roadrunners aimed for a final score with less than two minutes left. But Army’s defense held strong, thwarting UTSA’s last drive and securing the win with two kneel downs.

Key Player Performances

Daily’s remarkable performance included 27 carries for 147 yards and two touchdowns, while wide receiver Casey Reynolds caught four passes for 81 yards. For the Roadrunners, McCown concluded the game with 207 passing yards and two interceptions, with Amador leading the receiving corps with 75 yards on seven catches.

Season Outlook

With the win, Army improved its record to 10-1, maintaining its pursuit of a conference championship. They will face the Tulane Green Wave next Friday. The Roadrunners finished the season 6-6 and will await potential bowl game placements as they wrap up their campaign.

This close contest at Michie Stadium captured the excitement of college football, showcasing both teams’ skills and determination as they head into the future.
