The award ceremony will take place on May 5, 2025, in Washington, D.C.
San Angelo is celebrating a significant milestone as the Angelo State University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) has been selected to receive the coveted 2025 Small Business Development Center Excellence and Innovation Award by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). This award is more than just a shiny trophy; it’s a recognition of the incredible work being done right here in our community to support local businesses and stimulate economic growth.
The award ceremony is set to take place on May 5, 2025, in Washington, D.C., and what a fantastic day that is going to be! This event is part of the SBA’s annual National Small Business Week awards program, which aims to spotlight institutions making a positive impact on local economies.
What makes this recognition even more special? The ASU SBDC is the very first entity in Texas to win this award in its category! That’s right—San Angelo is taking the spotlight! The SBDC has distinguished itself by attaining some impressive results that contributed to the local economy.
This little powerhouse has achieved an inspiring 164% of its goal for total clients counseled. This means they’re not just helping people; they’re knocking it out of the park! They’ve also supported an astounding 152% of their goal for business start-ups and expansions, proving that they know how to kick-start entrepreneurial dreams.
The job market in our region is looking a lot better thanks to the SBDC. They’ve created and retained 390 jobs, surpassing their target by an impressive 140%. And it doesn’t stop there! The SBDC generated a capital infusion of over $6.75 million for our regional economy, hitting 150% of its goal. That’s a lot of money flowing into local pockets!
Education is the cornerstone of success, and the SBDC is dedicated to providing that for our community. They hosted 113 training events and seminars that attracted over 1,900 attendees. This tremendous commitment translates to a whopping 193% of their goal achieved. Not to mention, they offered 141 training events overall, well beyond their initial target!
Operating since 1990, the ASU SBDC serves a ten-county region with a dedicated team. The five-person staff, along with three ASU graduate students, is committed to providing expert business advising and training, focusing on essential areas like planning, financing, marketing, and management.
Located in the Business Resource Center downtown, they are part of the Texas South-West SBDC Network. The inclusion of graduate business students provides them with invaluable practical experience during their internships at the SBDC—an excellent way to bridge education and the real world!
For those interested in entrepreneurship, ASU offers a thrilling opportunity through its annual BizPitch entrepreneurship contest. Students from all majors can compete for substantial prize money to help kick-start their business ideas!
In fiscal year 2024, the SBDC helped in the launch and expansion of 76 small businesses. That’s not merely a number; it’s representative of dreams turned into reality and livelihoods created. It’s clear that the SBDC is not just a center; it’s a hub for innovation and progress.
As we look forward to the award ceremony in 2025, let’s take a moment to celebrate the amazing work being done by the Angelo State University Small Business Development Center. Together, we’re building a brighter future for San Angelo’s economy, one small business at a time!
