Applications Open for Scholarship Honoring San Antonio-Area Airplane Mechanic

San Antonio – The memory of Zachary Collie-Moreno, a young airplane mechanic who tragically lost his life in a plane crash last year, is honored through a newly established scholarship fund. Zach, who was only 20 years old, was known for his passion for aviation and his dreams of flight. He was part of the Commemorative Air Force Central Texas Wing and devoted to his work in aircraft maintenance.

Tragic Loss and Lasting Legacy

In July 2023, Zachary was one of two individuals who perished when a plane went down in Lake Winnebago, Wisconsin, while attending an airshow in Oshkosh. His mother, Jennifer Greenberg, recalls how immersed Zach was in the world of aviation. “He really felt like that was where he was supposed to be, and he was so happy doing it,” she said.

Building a Scholarship Fund

Following his untimely death, Zach’s family collaborated with the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) to establish a scholarship in his name. In just under a year, the community has raised over **$50,000**, demonstrating the impact Zach had on those around him and the strength of support for his legacy. “It was just cool to see so many people come from so many places and want to give something in Zach’s name,” shared Jennifer.

Who Can Apply?

The scholarship aims to support students pursuing careers in aviation, and applications are now open for potential candidates. Jennifer emphasized that they are looking for applicants who have a genuine passion for aviation: “Ideally, the perfect candidate for the scholarship is going to be someone who’s there because they want to be in it, not just because they have to be. That would make us and Zach very proud.”

Application Details

There is currently no set deadline for applications for the scholarship, making it a timely opportunity for students interested in the aerospace field. Eligibility and submission information can be found on the CAF’s website. For those also interested in contributing to Zachary’s legacy, donations are still being accepted for the scholarship fund.

Continuing Devyn Reiley’s Legacy

In the same tragic accident, pilot Devyn Reiley also lost her life. A scholarship in her name remains open, encouraging support for future aviators. The families of both Zach and Devyn have chosen to channel their grief into supportive action for young people aspiring to enter the aviation industry.
