A tragic incident occurred over the weekend at Bexar County Jail, as one of the inmates, identified as Juan Moreno-Hernandez, reportedly died from an alleged substance overdose. His time of death was declared shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Saturday by the detention center’s medical staff, following a grave medical event that they believe was triggered by ingestion of an unknown substance.
Just after 11 p.m., the detention staff found Moreno-Hernandez and another inmate unresponsive in their cell. The events that followed were characterized by immediate and rigorous efforts to save their lives. The deputy, upon discovering the lifeless bodies, immediately called in for assistance and swiftly initiated life-prolonging measures.
The medical team took over upon arrival, quickly administering Narcan—a drug primarily used to counteract the fatal effects of opioid-overdosing—to both men. Miraculously, the efforts were somewhat effective. A 50-year-old man of the duo revived his consciousness shortly after being treated with Narcan, and was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for further care and supervision.
The specific cause and manner of Moreno-Hernandez’s unfortunate demise, however, remains yet to be definitively identified. This responsibility is placed upon the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office, who are currently working on unraveling the events leading to the untimely death.
A rigorous investigation is currently in progress, spearheaded by the Bexar County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office, as per the regulations of the Sandra Bland Act. This law mandates compulsory county constable involvement in cases of custodial deaths. The primary objective of the current investigation is to procure a comprehensive and fact-based understanding of the events and factors leading to Moreno-Hernandez’s unfortunate end, and to take necessary measures to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
More updates about this incident will be provided as the investigations process continues. Until then, an air of apprehension persists over the Bexar County Jail.
