SAN ANTONIO – Bexar County is currently grappling with a significant challenge in suicide prevention. The suicide rates, which have been steadily increasing across the nation since 2005, have shot up by a staggering 33 percent in Bexar County. The mounting issue has prompted community leaders and healthcare providers to seek effective strategies with an emphasis focused on mental wellness.
In an attempt to address this distressing issue, the Center for Health Care Services hosted its ‘Behavioral Health and Wellness Conference’ on Friday. The conference invited anyone in need of a broad range of services, including ‘Substance Use and Recovery’, and youth mental health.
The conference also advocated suicide prevention techniques, urging individuals to be observant of loved ones, be mindful of changes in behavior, and react promptly to reckless behavior. Experts at the event emphasized that the groundwork for suicide prevention begins with being open about the persisting issue. They insisted that being forthright also contributes significantly when addressing mental health and safety.
The Center for Health Care Services also introduced a program called Mental Health First Aid, specially curated to equip people with coping mechanisms for a variety of issues. This program is free of charge and already has enjoyed substantial participation from the community.
Addressing immediate needs, the center also provides a crisis line service that is available to anyone seeking assistance. The service can be reached at the contact number 210-223-safe. The crisis line ensures immediate support for individuals in critical need, providing much needed immediate assistance.
The rise in suicide rates is a critical issue that requires a swift and comprehensive approach. Bexar County’s recent initiatives show promising steps in the right direction with their active response and commitment to providing community-centered support. Working together, the community hopes to see a significant reduction in these devastating statistics, ultimately creating a safer, more supportive environment for all.
