UTSA Researchers Discover Benefits of Bird Feeders in San Antonio
Encouraging a Robust Bird Population
San Antonio is finding a way to keep its skies filled with chirps and tweets, thanks to an intriguing study conducted by researchers at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). Amidst the expansion of urban areas, the use of backyard bird feeders has been shown to play a significant role in supporting the local bird population.
A Two-Year Study
The study, spanning over two years, examined how backyard bird feeders influence the variety and abundance of birds in the San Antonio area. According to the research team, over 6000 birds from approximately 40 different species were observed, making it clear that San Antonio remains a thriving habitat for birds, despite its growing urban landscape.
What Attracts Birds?
UTSA assistant professor and avian ecologist, Jennifer Smith, explained, “In our study, we saw that both mixed seed and Niger seed effectively increased the abundance of birds in local yards.” Students participating in the research, such as Amanda Lamberson, noted that common visitors included the Lesser Goldfinches, White-Winged Doves, and Northern Cardinals.
More Research Needed
While the findings are promising, Smith emphasizes that more research is necessary to understand the full impact of bird feeders. Lamberson highlighted the importance of planting native vegetation as an additional means to support the bird community: “Focusing on planting native trees and fruit-bearing plants provides essential habitats and food for many bird species.”

Smith pointed out that a healthy bird population can indicate broader environmental health, shedding light on possible issues such as air or water pollution. “Monitoring bird populations helps us consider our own health and wellbeing as humans,” she stated.
