News Summary

The South Texas Blood and Tissue Center is opening a new blood donation site on January 14, 2025, on the South Side of San Antonio. This center will feature a mural from local artist Cristina Sosa Noriega, celebrating community spirit and encouraging more people to donate blood. With donations often declining in January during National Blood Donor Awareness Month, this new location aims to address the pressing need for blood donors. Special community events and incentives, like a Spurs T-shirt for donors, are also planned to boost participation.

South Side of San Antonio Welcomes New Blood Donation Center!

Exciting news for the community of San Antonio! The South Texas Blood and Tissue Center (STBTC) is set to open a brand-new donor location on the bustling South Side. This highly anticipated center is located at the vibrant 3100 block of SE Military Drive, Ste. 105, and will officially welcome donors on January 14, 2025.

A Splash of Color and Community Spirit

To make this opening even more special, the center will feature a stunning mural created by local artist Cristina Sosa Noriega. Sosa Noriega is known for her captivating public art that celebrates Mexican culture with a unique Texan twist. Her mural at the donor center is not just a feast for the eyes; it carries a powerful message of unity and hope.

The mural beautifully illustrates the connection between blood donors and recipients, featuring the inspiring story of Mayah Zamora, a brave survivor of the tragic Robb Elementary School shooting. In a touching tribute, it also depicts her donor, 17-year-old Adrianna Garcia. This artwork aims to convey that anyone—regardless of age or gender—has the potential to be a blood donor, helping to save lives in the process.

Why Now? National Blood Donor Awareness Month

Did you know that January is National Blood Donor Awareness Month? This month typically sees a drop in donations, which makes the new opening of the donor center all the more crucial. With only about 3% of the eligible U.S. population rolling up their sleeves to donate, there’s a pressing need for more lifesavers. Almost 38% of people in the U.S. are eligible to give blood; imagine the impact if more people took that step!

If you’ve ever considered donating, now is the perfect time. Simply visit the South Texas Blood and Tissue website or give them a call at 210-731-5590 to find out how you can help. And hey, there’s an added bonus! Donors at the STBTC will receive a stylish San Antonio Spurs T-shirt as a thank-you gift for their generosity.

The Inspiring Story of Lamar and Caroline Garrett

Let’s not forget the real-life heroes in our community. Take Lamar and Caroline Garrett, for instance. This wonderful couple has been donating blood together since 1991 and have inspired many with their dedication. Lamar himself began donating way back in 1966, following his Navy service where he witnessed firsthand the urgent need for blood. Continuous contributions from steadfast couples like the Garretts play a key role in maintaining a steady blood supply, allowing hospitals to save countless lives.

University Hospital officials consistently emphasize the profound impact that blood donations have on patients in need. Those extra pints can be the difference between life and death, proving that each donation is a vital lifeline.

Community Events and Blood Drives

Moreover, as if that wasn’t enough, there’s a community mobile blood drive happening in partnership with the San Antonio Spurs throughout January. Even more reasons to get involved! Don’t miss out on your chance to snag a snazzy Spurs T-shirt while you help others at the same time.

On January 14, RVK Architecture and Downtown Substation will be hosting a blood drive at the SAPD parking lot at 2002 N. St. Mary’s #102, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.. Mark your calendars, gather your friends, and make a day out of it!

Ready to roll up your sleeves? To sign up for the blood drive, simply swing by the South Texas Blood and Tissue website or dial 210-731-5590. Let’s show the community that when it comes to saving lives, everyone can pitch in!

Every pint counts, and together, we can make a difference. Don’t wait—donate!
