Cadence Cuellar Shines as Freshman in UTSA Pom Squad

San Antonio is buzzing with excitement as one of its newest stars, Cadence Cuellar, takes center stage as a member of the University of Texas at San Antonio’s (UTSA) Pom Squad. This vibrant freshman, who previously showcased her talents as a Larriette, is embracing her collegiate journey while balancing dance and academics like a pro.

Making the Transition

Cuellar is currently wrapping up her freshman year, and what a whirlwind it has been! Since moving away from her family to attend college, she has navigated the significant transition from high school to university life with grace. Living alone in a new city has offered her a chance to grow personally and artistically, marking a pivotal moment in her journey.

Living the Dream

As a newcomer to the competitive world of collegiate dancing, Cuellar has already proven her mettle. During the fall semester, she lit up the sidelines cheering on the UTSA Roadrunners at football games, showcasing her skills and passion for dance. It is clear she thrives within this spirited environment, and her participation in home basketball games has only deepened her love for the game.

Balancing Act

Life as a student and dancer can be demanding, but Cuellar has crafted a recipe for success. With a full course load of 16 credit hours coupled with Pom Squad practices, she navigates her busy schedule with confidence. The secret? An effective routine that allows her to tackle her studies and late-night dance practices. This mix of academic dedication and artistic commitment is no small feat, but Cuellar is rising to the occasion.

Collegiate Dance Experience

Although Cuellar recalls high school drill team practices being more rigorous, she appreciates the camaraderie within the collegiate Pom Squad. Being part of a smaller community of 28 dancers, including 11 fellow freshmen, has brought synergy and joy to her dance experience. Each practice, held three times a week for four to five hours, is a chance to connect and grow with her peers who share the same passion for dance.

Tackling Challenges

Cuellar’s journey hasn’t been without its hurdles. During high school, she faced adversity due to the pandemic, which led to limited performances. Yet, her determination shone through as she continued to pursue her passion for dance, eventually earning a promotion to first lieutenant within the Larriette program during her senior year. It’s this kind of resilience and leadership that helped her to ultimately win a coveted spot on the UTSA Pom Squad, impressing the selection panel in a multi-round audition process out of over 80 competitors.

Future Goals

Looking ahead, Cuellar is excited about the upcoming spring semester, with plans to perform at both men’s and women’s basketball games. She is not only focused on dance but also enthusiastic about her studies as a psychology major. Cuellar acknowledges the importance of maintaining this balance, and she feels more confident than ever in managing her responsibilities as both a dedicated student and a passionate dancer.

Shaping the Future

Reflecting on how her time with the Larriettes shaped her college readiness, Cuellar credits the experience with instilling vital skills in time management and teamwork. These qualities have prepared her for the adventures that lie ahead in her academic and dance career.

As Cadence Cuellar continues her journey at UTSA, San Antonio awaits with anticipation, eager to see what this talented young woman will do next on and off the dance floor. With her passion for dance and academic pursuits, there’s no doubt she is destined for success!
