Last Monday, September 9, a seemingly innocent trip to Family Dollar turned into a chaotic scene at a store in San Antonio. In a story that has caught the attention of many locals, a father found himself in a precarious situation after leaving his two young children alone in a running vehicle.
According to reports, Derrick Deloach, the father of two, stepped inside the Family Dollar located on North Foster Road, intending to grab a few quick items. He briefly left his sleeping children—aged just 3 and 5—inside the running car. However, things took a wild turn as one of the kids managed to hop into the driver’s seat.
Before anyone could register what was happening, the young child accidentally backed out of the parking space and onto the main roadway. Witnesses outside the store were shocked when they saw the vehicle drive out onto the busy street. It became an alarming scene as passersby rushed to intervene.
As the car made its way into traffic, it seemed like a recipe for disaster. Mercifully, although there was a crash reported in the parking lot, it seems that neither the vehicle nor surrounding property suffered any significant damage. The quick-thinking witnesses not only safeguarded the child who exited the vehicle but also helped to recover the runaway car. In an impressive show of community alertness, bystanders managed to steer the vehicle back into the parking area where it eventually hit a curb.
Once deputies arrived on the scene, they spoke with Deloach, who claimed he had only been inside the store for about ten minutes. He expressed his assurance that his children were just peacefully asleep when he left them in the car. However, the authorities were not as lenient. Deloach was arrested and faced serious charges: two counts of abandoning or endangering a child for leaving his kids unattended and unrestrained in the running vehicle. It’s a stark reminder of how quickly things can unravel.
After being taken into custody, he was booked into the Bexar County Jail but was released the following day on bond, as per the court records. Although both children were unharmed, this incident raised a significant alarm about child safety during such quick errands.
Interestingly, it seems that this wasn’t the only case of child endangerment the San Antonio police encountered that same day. Another mother reported that a tow truck driver had mistakenly towed her car while her daughter was still in the backseat. These shocking incidents have sparked important conversations around proper supervision and safety for children in public places.
As parents, it’s crucial to always consider the potential dangers every single time, no matter how short the errand may be. This incident serves as a stark reminder for everyone to prioritize safety. In an ever-evolving world where everyone is busy, let’s make sure to keep our little ones safe and sound, right by our sides.
It’s essential to spread awareness about the risks of leaving children unattended, as no quick errand is worth the risk of harm. Thank goodness everyone involved is safe, and we all hope that situations like this one can serve as teachable moments for parents everywhere!
