Sponsor Our ArticlesResidents of San Antonio are facing a significant change as CHRISTUS Health plans to close its Medical Center hospital on April 25, 2025. This decision, aimed at aligning with the community’s evolving healthcare needs, will impact 479 staff members. However, CHRISTUS Health is proactively working to transition affected employees to other facilities in the region. With over 500 job openings available across local hospitals, the organization is committed to ensuring a smooth transition while prioritizing patient care in the community.
Exciting yet uncertain times are ahead for the residents of San Antonio as CHRISTUS Health prepares to close its Medical Center hospital located on Babcock Road on April 25, 2025. This decision stems from an effort to align with the evolving health care needs of the community, aiming to consolidate care and enhance services in nearby facilities.
The Medical Center employs a total of 479 individuals, including dedicated registered nurses, certified nursing assistants, and other vital roles that support patient care, like technicians and risk management personnel. While this transition might have raised some eyebrows, especially among the staff, CHRISTUS Health is working diligently to prevent layoffs.
In a note to the Texas Workforce Commission, the CEO shared that all employees at the Medical Center will see their positions eliminated on the closure date. However, there’s a silver lining! CHRISTUS Health is on a mission to find comparable positions for affected workers at its other local facilities. So far, the organization has successfully secured new roles for more than 80 employees out of the 479 affected, which is a great start.
With hopes set high, CHRISTUS is aiming for a 100% relocation rate before the big day. The good news is that they have several facilities in the San Antonio area that could help provide opportunities for staff. These include a downtown children’s hospital and a hub located in Alamo Heights. As the Medical Center’s inpatient beds are phased out, they will be replaced by services at the CHRISTUS Westover Hills location, showing a commitment to maintaining comprehensive care.
For those working at the Medical Center, it’s worth noting that CHRISTUS is not standing still. There are currently over 500 job openings across various hospitals in the San Antonio area and more than 2,000 openings available throughout Texas. This could mean new beginnings for many individuals who are longing to stay within the healthcare family of CHRISTUS.
The driving force behind the closure decision was to ensure that the well-being of patients and associates remains the top priority. Employees who are affected aren’t represented by a union, which might make the transition a bit more challenging, as there are no job placements guaranteed based on seniority. Nonetheless, CHRISTUS Health is committed to making this transition as smooth as possible for everyone involved.
It’s notable that over the past five years, CHRISTUS Health has invested $300 million to improve services and facilities throughout South Texas. This investment exemplifies their long-term commitment to enhancing healthcare access and quality in the region, with the ultimate aim of creating a healthier San Antonio.
As we approach the closure date, the community is left with both apprehension and hope. Though change is never easy, the efforts made by CHRISTUS Health to support employees and enhance care services indicate a promising future for residents and staff alike. So, hold on tight, San Antonio! Exciting changes are rolling in, and together, we will face them head-on.
