Condor Airlines Scaling Back San Antonio Flight Plans

Condor Airlines Scaling Back San Antonio Flight Plans

In a surprising move, German carrier, Condor Airlines, has decided to reduce its flight rotations between San Antonio and Frankfurt after operating the city’s first-ever nonstop flight to Europe for just over a month. The seasonal nonstop route, which commenced on May 17th, has operated every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Decreasing Flight Frequency

The airline has recently deliberated plans to scale back going forth, making adjustments to the flight frequency. Condor Airlines, starting next summer, will cut its weekly flights between San Antonio and Frankfurt from three to two. This course of action emerges in the wake of unclear indications on how well the flights have been performing between San Antonio, one of America’s most impoverished big cities, and Frankfurt, Europe’s financial hub. The inaugural flight to Germany was reportedly operating with 110 empty seats and the return trip was approximately half empty.

Performance In Line with Expectations

Last month, Condor Airlines declined to provide the passenger data concerning the San Antonio to Frankfurt route. Charles Mardkis, a spokesperson for the airline, insisted that the route was performing in line with the expectations that Condor Airlines had outlined for it. “What we can share is that the San Antonio route is functioning in compliance with the expectations that Condor Airlines had projected for the first-ever route to Frankfurt and to Europe,” he said.

Local Response to Condor’s Announcement

Despite Mardkis’ optimism, the local authorities confirmed that the airline decided to reduce its weekly flights. However, Greater: SATX, an economic development group, lauded the airline’s decision to continue operations in San Antonio next summer. Jamie Bloodworth, a spokesperson for Greater: SATX, stated, “We are already proving the demand for nonstop travel to Europe.”

Greater Incentives for Condor Airlines

Condor Airlines was enticed to San Antonio in part due to its subsidy agreement amounting to $1.3 million with the city. The city’s tourism and marketing agency, Visit San Antonio, further sweetened the deal with an additional, undisclosed subsidy. Going forward, updates recommended to stay tuned in with the city’s progress in securing international routes connecting it with economic hubs globally.
