Sponsor Our ArticlesSan Antonio has been shaken by a series of construction-related accidents leading to injuries and tragic fatalities. A recent spate of incidents has raised concerns about worker safety and public risk, as both workers and community members face alarming dangers at construction sites. Authorities are currently investigating these events, hoping to find solutions and implement better safety measures to prevent future tragedies.
San Antonio has recently seen a troubling string of construction-related accidents that have left the community alarmed and mourning. With incidents occurring throughout the past week, both workers and the general public are feeling the weight of these dangerous situations.
In a chilling incident early Saturday morning, a 16-year-old construction worker was struck by a vehicle driven by a 22-year-old woman who was allegedly under the influence. The crash happened around 4:20 a.m. near US Hwy 90 and Loop 410. The driver lost control on the frontage road, careening into a telephone pole before finally slamming into a fence and ending up in a nearby field. The young worker was swiftly taken to the hospital, thankfully suffering from non-life-threatening injuries. Meanwhile, the driver faced serious charges, being arrested for intoxication assault, and was also transported hospital for her injuries.
The dangers of the construction site were further highlighted just a day earlier, on Friday, when two workers suffered severe injuries at the Loop 1604 and Interstate 10 interchange shortly after 12:30 a.m.. These men were working in a cherry picker high above when the unthinkable happened—a chain holding two beams broke, causing those immense beams to plummet. The force of the falling materials sent the cherry picker crashing down, trapping the workers inside. Firefighters rushed to the scene, using their equipment to extract the pinned workers and transport them to the hospital.
In the aftermath of this shocking incident, concerns arose about another beam that was precariously hanging above the work site. There are serious worries that it might also break and lead to further injuries, leaving many on-site uneasy.
This past week has also seen devastating losses. On Tuesday, a heartbreaking accident claimed the life of 39-year-old Jose Angel Gonzalez, a construction worker from Venezuela, at a job site in Schertz. The incident occurred around 4:24 p.m. and is being labeled by local police as an “unfortunate accident”. Gonzalez was employed by Yantis Construction, a local company that is currently collaborating closely with investigators from both the Schertz Police Department and OSHA.
Further adding to the troubling events, a construction deputy was also struck on Thursday night around 10 p.m. while handling construction traffic management near Blanco Rd and Loop 1604. The incident happened when a vehicle drove recklessly between cones, colliding with her truck and subsequently striking her. Fortunately, she was reported to be in stable condition following treatment at a local hospital, although the experience certainly sounded harrowing.
As if this series of accidents wasn’t alarming enough, a man tragically lost his life after being struck by a crane earlier in the week on Wednesday around 1:30 a.m.. The unfortunate collision happened in a construction zone along Loop 1604 and Interstate 10, where the boom of the crane unexpectedly collided with the man’s pickup truck, tearing the roof off the vehicle and claiming his life on the spot. The lane he was driving in was miraculously not blocked off at the time of the accident, leading to questions about safety protocols in place at the time.
Authorities are currently in the thick of investigations surrounding all the incidents mentioned, as the safety of workers and the public continues to be a pressing concern. As San Antonio grapples with the fallout from these accidents, it’s clear that a renewed focus on safety and caution is needed to avoid further tragedies.
As the community reflects and supports those affected by these incidents, it’s a stark reminder that safety should always be a top priority in construction zones. The hope is that lessons will be learned, and measures put in place to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
