This weekend, San Antonio is set to come alive with the sound of music as the SOLI Chamber Ensemble rolls out its much-anticipated showcase. It’s not just any ordinary event; it’s a celebration of 30 years of contemporary chamber music, titled the 30x30x30 Project. The ensemble will feature 30 unique compositions created by 30 innovative composers. That’s right—30 distinct musical pieces ready to tantalize the ears of the audience!
At the heart of this event is the commitment to spotlight young composers, a sentiment echoed by violinist and managing director, Ertan Torgul. It’s about bringing fresh voices into the spotlight and ensuring they have a chance to shine. To make this happen, SOLI Chamber Ensemble reached out nationwide for compositions from early-career composers and the response was overwhelming. Almost 300 submissions came pouring in, proving there’s a vast ocean of creativity out there just waiting to be explored.
A careful selection team took on the challenging task of going through all these entries to handpick the top winners. It’s no easy feat, but ultimately, it leads to showcasing some very talented individuals. Among the chosen few, three of the composers have a special connection to San Antonio: Edna Longoria, Conner Simmons, and Yeonsuk Jung. Each of them has a unique story and style that adds to the rich tapestry of this weekend’s performances.
One standout is Yeonsuk Jung, who is currently pursuing a master’s degree at Bowling Green State University but has roots in San Antonio. He’s excited to share his piece, titled ‘Water Skeeter Unraveling’, which draws inspiration from local performers, particularly the Camerata San Antonio. For Jung, this performance is not just about showcasing his music; it’s also about representing his identity and connection to San Antonio.
Jung previously participated in the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio, which adds another layer of significance to his involvement in this showcase. It’s a wonderful reminder of how the local music scene fosters young talent and supports their growth into professional careers. The excitement surrounding this is palpable, as audiences can look forward to experiencing his artistic expression firsthand.
The showcase will take place at the beautiful Ruth Taylor Recital Hall at Trinity University, a fitting venue that invites an intimate connection between the performers and the audience. The weekend is packed with talent, featuring four composers on Saturday and another four on Sunday, making it a perfect weekend outing for music lovers. The public is warmly invited to attend these performances and partake in this cultural experience.
Attendees can expect an enthralling mix of vibrant tunes and innovative compositions that reflect the diverse influences and backgrounds of contemporary music. The event is not just an evening of delightful notes; it’s a powerful statement highlighting the wealth of musical talent that exists within San Antonio. This showcase is a wonderful opportunity to witness the future of contemporary music being shaped today.
So, whether you’re a long-time fan of contemporary chamber music or a newcomer curious about the local scene, this showcase promises something for everyone. Come out to enjoy the music that’s not only entertaining but deeply meaningful as well.
