San Antonio Welcomes Back CowParade with Open Hooves!
Hey there, San Antonio! If you think a herd of cows couldn’t possibly be a big deal, think again! The city is about to be graced by the colorful and creative charms of CowParade San Antonio, returning after a long wait of over two decades. Mark your calendars for the summer of 2025 because that’s when this fantastic international public art project will come to life once more in our beautiful city!
Allison Gregory Leads the Herd
The mastermind behind the lead cow is none other than local artist Allison Gregory, who just revealed her dazzling creation, named “Good MOOd,” at a fabulous launch party at AnArte Gallery. It’s a stunning piece, decked out in vibrant beads and a shiny finish that screams “look at me!” The excitement is palpable, and it’s easy to see why Gregory, who championed bringing CowParade back for the past six years, was named lead artist. “San Antonio is such a vibrant city for the arts,” she said, “and to have this project back is phenomenal!”
From Lackluster to Loveworthy
Can you believe it’s been since 2003 that CowParade last trotted through town? Many folks might have completely forgotten it was here! Gregory makes a compelling case—this is the *largest public art event in the world*, and San Antonio is ready to strut its creative stuff once again.
A Full Herd of Artists
This time around, about 35 local artists will be joining Gregory, each getting a fiberglass cow to turn into their own individual works of art. The excitement doesn’t stop there! The project culminates in an auction where the cows will be up for bids, and all proceeds will benefit the Christus Children’s Foundation. What a way to merge creativity with community support!
Riding the Wave of Creativity
The director of partnerships and events at Christus, Theo Meyer, couldn’t resist the opportunity to get involved. He noted, “This is a creative way to engage our community while celebrating public art and raising awareness for our cause.” Talk about a win-win!
Meet the Artists
Among the artists is Lindy Perez, an abstract artist and calligrapher, ready to paint a garden-themed cow sprinkled with friendly Texan greetings like “howdy” and “hello.” She expressed her excitement, saying it’s her first public art piece and a way to push her creative boundaries. What a fantastic way to make a personal mark on the city!
Then we have partners Raisa Melendez and Marco Vargas, who are planning to incorporate cultural imagery and themes from our region. Melendez has some vibrant ideas featuring traditional aprons worn by grandmas and a flying cowboy—how cool is that?
Young Creatives Step Up
The excitement doesn’t just belong to seasoned professionals. The youngest artists in the lineup are 13-year-olds Emely Mejia and Genevive Fernandez, who have taken on a cow inspired by the Mayan calendar. Their art teacher, Mario Garcia, was thrilled to get them this unique opportunity. “It’s a big deal for them to showcase their work alongside established artists,” he noted. What an inspiring experience for these budding creators!
A Heartfelt Mission
Gregory’s vision for her cow imparts a theme of hope, peace, and love, and it’s all about spreading positivity. Reflecting on her last experience with CowParade in Austin, where her artworks raised significant funds for children’s health, she explained, “It’s all about bringing in joy and support for the community.”
