SAN ANTONIO- Cleaner, greener, better- that’s the path CPS energy is treading with an aim to shut down coal and older natural gas plants. As part of this initiative, CPS Energy has slated the closure of the Braunig natural gas plant.
Progressing Towards Cleaner Energy Goals Using a Strategic Plan
Recently, CPS Energy also acquired two additional power plants in Laredo and Corpus Christi, as part of its strategic efforts to streamline cleaner energy generation. This progressive action is all part of envisioning a greener future as per their Vision 2027 plan. CPS Energy President and CEO, Rudy Garza said, “Our generation plan in general would have a downward pressure on the overall level of fuel.”
Phasing Out Older Power Plants for New Age Alternatives
As part of Vision 2027, the plan includes retiring older power plants and replacing them with newer ones that work on a combination of gas, solar energy, wind energy, and energy storage. Added Garza, “So, at the end of the day, with this plan, customers will benefit because we’ll be spending less on fuel.”
Support from Alamo Sierra Club
The Alamo Sierra Club, a fervent supporter of sustainable energy solutions, has endorsed these moves, having worked alongside CPS Energy for many years to facilitate a transition away from fossil fuels. Alan Montemayor, chair of the group, called the decision beneficial not just from a CO2 standpoint but also in terms of reducing Knox, particulate matter, and sulfur dioxide emissions.
Stepping Into the Next Phase of the Green Initiative
With the 2027 goal in sight, CPS Energy is already planning for the next phase of the project. The projection is to expand their portfolio and add another 4,500 megawatts of solar capacity in the market over the next 12-18 months. “I think we’re going to continue to grow our portfolio… we’ll kinda take stock of where we are at and we’ll go from there,” added Garza.
