SAN ANTONIO- The Alamo city is gearing up for an extensive enhancement in its public transit infrastructure. With over 2 million residents and counting, the city’s rapid growth prompted Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-TX) to secure $110 million in funding for an expedited transit route. This route aims to bridge the city with the San Antonio International Airport, instigating a significant convenience for tourists, workers, and students in need of fast and affordable transportation.
“Quality transportation infrastructure is key to growth and a high quality of life in our community,” noted Representative Cuellar. The secured fund will greatly impact the Southside community as they gain reliable transportation going to several key destinations including the San Antonio International Airport and VIA Metro Center. As part of VIA’s North/South Corridor Project, this plan will keep San Antonio connected coast-to-coast.
Destinations throughout the city will be covered by this new rapid transit route. Set to start from San Antonio International Airport, the route will end at Steves Avenue on the Southside. Stops include San Antonio College, VIA MetroCenter, Baptist Medical Center, Downtown, and Southtown San Antonio.
San Antonio has been on the path of rapid growth, with its resident count passing over 2 million in 2020. By 2040, population predictions suggest that the level may hit the 3 million mark. With such fast-track expansion, travel times are projected to increase by 82%. This new project, borne out of a $110 million funding, is a well-thought-out attempt to moderate such impact. As public transit is a key player in effectively controlling traffic congestions, the new high-speed route will facilitate easy commute throughout the city.
