Workers making safety improvements on Culebra Road
San Antonio’s Culebra Road, known for its hazardous conditions, is set for significant transformations thanks to an $8 million federal grant. This funding is part of a broader $1.8 billion initiative to enhance transportation safety nationwide. The improvements will focus on a 5-mile stretch, aiming to reduce accidents through upgrades such as sidewalks, bike lanes, and better street lighting. With a total project cost estimated between $100 million and $110 million, community input will be sought in late 2024 to ensure local concerns are addressed in the revamp.
San Antonio is buzzing with news that could bring some much-needed relief to one of its most perilous routes. Culebra Road, notorious for its treacherous driving conditions, has caught the attention of federal authorities, who have granted a whopping $8 million aimed at making safety improvements. For many locals, this comes as a welcome change, especially since Culebra has earned the harsh title of the most dangerous road in the city.
Over the last decade, Culebra Road has seen a staggering number of incidents, with more than 50 fatal crashes recorded. Last year was particularly grim, with 690 accidents reported and seven fatalities marking a disturbing trend. Among those unfortunate victims was Anthony Galvan, a young motorcyclist whose life was cut short due to a road mishap. This grim reality has intensified the urgency surrounding road safety, prompting city officials to mobilize resources for massive upgrades.
The recent funding is part of a colossal $1.8 billion round-up allocated by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s RAISE Program. This program is engineered to improve transportation infrastructure and enhance safety across the country, and Culebra Road is set to benefit significantly from this initiative. The improvements will specifically target a 5-mile stretch of Culebra Road, running from Loop 410 to General McMullen.
In addition to the federal funding, the City of San Antonio is gearing up for a complete reconstruction project on Culebra. Backed by an impressive $18 million as part of the 2022 Bond Program, this ambitious plan intends to refine Culebra’s roadway from Bandera Road all the way to General McMullen. Out of this budget, around $15 million is allocated for the core project, while $3 million is reserved for matching funds to amplify federal support.
The groundwork is already underway, with an estimated $11 million set aside for pre-construction tasks. This crucial phase, which involves environmental clearances and preliminary engineering assessments, will be funded with $8 million from the RAISE program alongside $3 million sourced locally from the Bond initiative.
So, what exactly will these improvements entail? Well, residents can look forward to a total revamp of Culebra Road, including constructs like sidewalks, bike lanes, street lighting, and upgraded intersections. On top of that, enhanced landscaping and improved drainage are also on the roster, contributing to a safer and more appealing roadway for everyone—drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists alike.
A pivotal aspect of this project involves community feedback. There will be a series of public input sessions starting in late 2024, aiming to gather insights and suggestions from those who know Culebra Road best—its daily users. This collaborative spirit is expected to foster a sense of ownership among locals, as their voices will help shape the future of their neighborhood streets.
Ultimately, the estimated cost of improving Culebra Road is projected to fall between $100 million and $110 million. As part of a broader vision under the Vision Zero initiative, which aims for zero fatalities on city roadways, this initiative may also help secure additional construction grants in the future, further bolstering safety efforts across San Antonio.
As plans move forward, both residents and city leaders are hopeful that these improvements will help turn Culebra Road from a danger zone into a safer, more navigable thoroughfare, marking a significant step toward improved road safety in the community.
