University of Texas at San Antonio to Celebrate Culture at Día del Niño

San Antonio – The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) will host the annual Día del Niño festival this Sunday, marking its first foray as host in the festival’s nearly 30-year history. The free family-friendly event is scheduled to take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m on the UTSA Downtown Campus’ Bill Miller Plaza, promising a blend of live entertainment, hands-on activities, and a showcase of San Antonio’s vibrant culture.

UTSA’s Dedication to Community and Culture

“As San Antonio’s largest university, UTSA is dedicated to preserving and sharing our community’s rich cultural history,” says Teresa Niño, UTSA vice president for university relations. The university appears eager to use this opportunity to welcome the community and its partners in hosting Día del Niño, a festival renowned for its celebration of family and culture.

Activities Geared Towards Cultural Learning

Beyond the fun activities and games aimed at kids aged two to 13, every parent and grandparent is sure to be enticed by the chance to make a paper hat, play lotería, or embroider a design to take home. The goal, as expressed by Rebeca Barrera, executive director of SOMOS Cultura y Más, is to design every activity for cultural learning. “Día del Niño has become one of the most important family celebrations of our city,” she notes.

Instilling Knowledge and Pride of Heritage

Trish DeBerry, president, and CEO of Centro San Antonio emphasized that the aim of Children’s Day is not just to celebrate, but also to inspire and nurture the creativity of young community members. The event is intended to showcase the city’s heritage and instill knowledge and pride of that heritage to every participant.

As DeBerry explains, “Centro is excited to collaborate with La Familia Cortez and SOMOS Cultura y Mas to host this event downtown, focusing on a vital segment of our community: our children. We aim for the activities at this event to inspire and nurture the creativity of our young community members.”

Accessibility and Parking Options

UTSA’s Downtown’s Bill Miller Plaza is fully wheelchair accessible, making the event convenient for everyone to attend. Several public and private parking options are also available in close proximity to the venue, ensuring convenient access for all participants.

Marking its debut as host, UTSA hopes the Día del Niño festival will not only celebrate the city’s cultural richness but also reflect the university’s commitment to community engagement, inclusivity, and education, while extending the opportunity for kids to get a glimpse into college life.
