Data Center Groundbreaking Reflects Tech Business Growth in San Antonio
The Emergence of a Tech Hub in the South Texan City
A new tech dawn is breaking in San Antonio, with the groundbreaking of a new data center marking the latest development in the city’s rapidly growing information technology and biotechnology sectors. The launch of the data center, which is being developed by CyrusOne, is a clear reflection of the increasing demand for advanced technology solutions not just in Texas, but across the globe.
CyrusOne’s Expansion in San Antonio
Located on West Military Drive and Loop 1604, the data center is the third campus CyrusOne is developing in San Antonio. Once completed, the center will support up to five buildings and will be able to accommodate up to 200 megawatts of IT capacity. The construction of the first 300,000-square-foot building is currently underway, with occupancy expected by next spring. The new data center will support an on-site 334-megawatt CPS Energy substation with access to data center hubs in nearby Westover Hills and Texas Research Park.
San Antonio’s Rising Tech Tip
This development, alongside others, is helping cement San Antonio as a formidable player in the technology space. In addition to CyrusOne’s center, Microsoft Corp is also developing two data center sites and a new campus on the city’s west side. Meanwhile, local non-profit VelocityTX is leading the creation of an innovation district, with VelocityTX Co-Labs offering shared laboratory space for emerging bioscience companies.
Investments in Local Tech Innovations
In line with this growth, Alamo Angels, the largest network of accredited angel investors in Texas, announced its second investment in local prosthetics company, Alt-Bionics. This investment comes as Alt-Bionics recently raised $1.1 million in seed money and reveals plans to expand into humanoid robotics. Following this investment, the company, which uses 3D-printing technology, hopes to continue making advancements in its modular bionic hand.
Boosting Cybersecurity in San Antonio
In addition to the above, the cybersecurity aspect of San Antonio’s tech scene has also received a recent boost with the recent launch of NukuDo’s North American headquarters in the city. NukuDo, a cybersecurity workforce development company, offers a six-month paid training program followed by direct employment for three years. The company’s first training class in San Antonio began in March and applications are now open for its August class.

San Antonio’s blossoming tech ecosystem could offer broad benefits for the community. As well as providing new jobs, these developments are contributing to a vibrant and innovative local technology culture. As NukuDo CEO Dean Gefen says, the firm chose San Antonio because of its “strong business community, diverse and skilled workforce, and effective cost of living.”
