SA District 10 Takes Measures to Aid Senior Citizens Amidst Summer Heat

In an attempt to bolster the welfare of senior citizens in San Antonio, District 10 is initiating a community effort titled Project Cool. An effort conceived in collaboration with Councilman Marc Whyte and Catholic Charities, Project Cool aims to supply box fans to heat-vulnerable seniors and disabled persons in the locality.

Project Cool: Fan Distribution for Senior Citizens

The summer season poses a substantial threat to seniors who may be living independently without air conditioning. Heat-related injuries often afflict the aged population frequently. To tackle this, District 10 has associated itself with Project Cool—a community initiative to distribute box fans to seniors. The drive primarily focuses on seniors aged 60 years and above and people with disabilities who need cooling devices during the sweltering summer heat.

To receive a box fan, seniors can dial the United Way Helpline at 2-1-1. One does not need to be a resident of District 10 to qualify. Any San Antonio resident fitting the aforementioned category can request a fan, and each recipient is entitled to one. The fans will be ready for pickup at the Northeast Senior Center, situated at 4135 Thousand Oaks Drive. The distribution is scheduled for June 29, from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Educational Program

Alongside the fan distribution, an additional program will be held to educate seniors about safe methods to stay cool during summer.

How the Community Can Help

donations of less than five 20-inch box fans can be given to any San Antonio Fire Department station, excluding Station 23 at the airport. Community members can also donate fans at St. Stephen’s Care Center at 2127 S Zarzamora Street, open from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. For donations of five or more fans, only 20-inch box fans are accepted.

Monetary contributions are also welcome. Interested donors can mail checks payable to “Project Cool c/o Catholic Charities” to Catholic Charities of San Antonio at 202 W French Place.
