San Antonio — The heart-wrenching aftermath of a dog attack that occurred earlier this week has shocked the community and left many grappling with disbelief. With images that are tough to shake off, Bexar County investigators have released disturbing details of the incident that took place on a Monday morning, leading to the tragic death of 13-month-old Jiryiah Johnson.
The crime scene paints a grisly picture, with signs of struggle evident throughout the home. Bloodstains mark the bed, door, and floors. Filthy carpets and scattered debris hint at the chaos that unfolded. According to sheriff’s officials, at least one door bears the telltale signs of dogs having chewed their way through to get to the rooms where young Jiryiah was present.
According to Sheriff Javier Salazar, the attempt made by Jiryiah’s 13-year-old sibling to save the baby from the aggressive dogs was nothing short of heroic. “She made every effort possible,” Salazar said, highlighting how the young girl valiantly tried to shield her baby brother, even lifting him over her head. Unfortunately, the situation quickly spiraled out of control when one of the dogs managed to grab the infant from her grasp.
As Sheriff Salazar explained, “This little girl was put in a situation where she went from that bedroom to a bathroom to another bedroom and was chased every step of the way by these dogs.” This tragic unfolding of events ultimately culminated in the loss of Jiryiah’s life, a reality that has left family and law enforcement officials utterly devastated.
Despite the heartbreaking loss, the mother of the baby, 36-year-old Heather Rodriguez, remains implicated, facing the serious charge of causing bodily injury to the child, a first-degree felony. Her bond has been set at $100,000. Sheriff Salazar expressed his disgust and anger over Rodriguez’s apparent disregard for the dangerous nature of the dogs, stating, “Not only was she exposing her own child to … these unpredictable animals, but she decided to bring a baby into that residence for sheer profit.”
While the charge has not been elevated to murder yet, Salazar indicated that conversations are underway regarding the potential for an increase in the bond amount or additional charges, particularly concerning the injuries sustained by the teenager in the struggle.
The dogs involved in the tragic attack are also a point of contention. Sheriff Salazar confirmed that only one dog has been fully surrendered so far. Meanwhile, the local health department is working to gain control of the remaining two. “We’re going to push… to see if we can go ahead and get all three dogs fully surrendered,” Salazar stated, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation. “If they’re not voluntarily surrendered, we will still assist them with whatever it is they need to fully seize those dogs through the court process.”
As the community mourns, support is pouring in for Jiryiah’s family. Julian Johnson and Erika Castro, the grieving parents, shared their devastation over their son’s tragic fate. They had entrusted Rodriguez with the care of their child, believing her to be a reliable family friend. “You left my son with a 13-year-old girl. It’s pure and utter belligerence,” Johnson lamented.
In these difficult times, they are relying heavily on faith and family support to navigate through the overwhelming grief. A Go Fund Me account has also been established to assist them with funeral costs, allowing the community to help in their time of need.
As investigations continue and responses to this harrowing incident unfold, residents of San Antonio are left to ponder the implications of such a tragedy, raising questions about responsible pet ownership and child safety in their own homes.
