On Tuesday, Texas Democratic Congressman Lloyd Doggett made a surprising call for President Joe Biden to withdraw from his party’s nomination for President, citing Biden’s disappointing performance in the recent debate against former President Donald Trump. This marked a significant shift within the Democratic party, making Doggett the first Democratic member of Congress to ask for Biden’s withdrawal since last week’s debate.
Doggett noted Biden’s lackluster standing in polls and key states. He stated, “President Biden has continued to run substantially behind Democratic senators in key states and in most polls has trailed Donald Trump”. He further expressed his frustration at Biden’s debate performance which he felt failed to effectively champion his accomplishments or counter Trump’s claims.
Shortly after Doggett’s statement, former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro also called for Biden to withdraw support. A one-time rival of Biden in the 2020 Democratic primaries, Castro cited the Democratic party’s need for a stronger option, naming Vice President Kamala Harris as a potential candidate.
Doggett’s call for Biden to step aside has sent ripples through the Democratic party. However, no consensus has been reached. Some Democrats are rallying behind President Biden, while others are silent on the matter.
In response to Doggett’s call, Rep. Sylvia Garcia-D, Houston, said, “I respect Rep. Doggett’s position but it is one I do not share. I am supporting Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and will work hard to get them reelected.” On the other hand, Rep. Al Green-D, Houston, asserted that a single debate cannot derail a campaign and expressed his continued support for Biden.
Regardless of whether Biden withdraws or not, the situation might significantly influence multiple competitive races in Texas. Disenchanted Democrats might opt to stay home on Election Day which could profoundly impact outcomes of other seats, including the U.S. Senate and the Congress.
If President Biden decides to withdraw his candidacy, the Democrats would have to choose a new nominee at their national convention in Chicago, scheduled for August. While some believe such a situation could descend into chaos, Doggett seems confident that the process would remain peaceful and active.
Doggett did not suggest any specific names for alternative presidential candidates but mentioned several party members who could potentially run for the position, including Vice President Kamala Harris among others.
So far, President Biden seems determined to remain in the race. He and his surrogates have been quelling nerves and ensuring continued financial support to his campaign following the debate. He addressed his shortcomings during a rally in North Carolina, admitting his physical agility might have declined but asserting his commitment to truth.
A previous version of this story incorrectly spelled the name of former Vice President Hubert Humphrey, who lost the presidential election to Richard Nixon in 1968.
