Get ready, San Antonio! From January 10 to January 26, 2025, the city will be alive with the sound of celebration during the annual DreamWeek festival. This vibrant event honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. while promoting tolerance and understanding among our diverse community.
Believe it or not, DreamWeek was just an idea back in the ’90s. It all started with Shokare “Sho” Nakpodia, a Nigerian immigrant who drove a taxi in New York City. Inspired by the desire to give back to the community, he envisioned a platform for open dialogue and exchange of ideas. Fast forward to 2013, and the first DreamWeek came to life, breathing fresh air into Dr. King’s vision of inclusivity and equity.
This year’s festivities promise an exhilarating lineup, featuring a whopping 17 days packed with activities. From panels and symposiums to film screenings and art shows, there’s something for everyone. DreamWeek has grown tremendously since its inception, hosting over 1,000 events and partnering with countless local organizations over the years. It continues to be a pivotal moment for community engagement and self-exploration.
Mark your calendar and stretch those legs! The lineup kicks off with the exciting musical Hadestown on January 10 at the Majestic Theatre. Make sure to arrive by 7:30 pm to catch the show. The festival will also host Voices of Equality: Celebrating Our Neighbor on January 11 at Geekdom from 2 to 4 pm, allowing folks to unite in the spirit of community.
On January 12, join the crowd for The Quilt: Live in Concert at San Fernando Cathedral, starting at 7 pm, which is bound to stir up some emotions. The DreamHour Speaker Series will be at Mark’s Outing on January 13 from 7 to 8:30 pm, where you can engage with speakers who inspire change. Don’t forget to mingle at the Dream Big Mixer on January 14 at Smoke Sky Bar, a perfect opportunity to meet new friends from 5:30 to 8 pm!
For those interested in health and wellness, the Mental Health Symposium on January 17 at Launch SA from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm is a must. It will provide valuable insights into mental well-being. Later, on January 18, indulge your fashion-loving side at the L’Afrique Fashion Show at Brick at Blue Star, from 2 to 4 pm.
