The El Camino College Women's Tennis Team competes in their first match after a long break.
After a two-year hiatus, the El Camino College Women’s Tennis Team returned to the court for their season opener against Mt. San Antonio College. Despite high hopes, the team faced a challenging match, suffering a loss of 8-1. The players, eager to showcase their skills, aim to improve and are looking forward to their next game against Victor Valley College. Coach Tom Hazell has highlighted the need for better court conditions to enhance player performance.
The sun was shining, and excitement was in the air as the El Camino College Women’s Tennis Team made their much-anticipated return to the court on a beautiful afternoon in Torrance. After a long break of two years, the team finally got back to playing competitive matches and kicked off their season with a home game on February 27, 2023. However, it wasn’t the comeback they had hoped for, as they faced a tough defeat against the Mt. San Antonio College Mounties, ending the match with a score of 8-1.
This season holds a special place in the hearts of the players, as it marks the first time the women’s tennis program has taken the court since 2022. The previous season was unfortunately canceled, primarily due to a shortage of players. Now, with a modest team of just five players, the Warriors are eager to showcase their skill and passion for the game, despite facing plenty of challenges along the way.
On match day, the usual head coach, Sergiu Boerica, was absent, having accompanied the men’s team to an away match. Filling his shoes, Tom Hazell, a full-time professor at the college, stepped in as the substitute coach. Hazell wasted no time in voicing his concerns about the condition of the ECC Tennis Courts, which he described as needing serious attention due to cracked surfaces, broken windscreens, and non-functional lights. Just like a classroom, Hazell emphasized that the tennis court should offer a conducive environment for players to excel.
The match commenced at 2:30 p.m. and featured both doubles and singles competitions. The Warriors struggled mightily in the doubles matches, getting off to a shaky start when they lost the first match in a disheartening 8-0 sweep. Despite this setback, spirits were lifted during the second doubles match, which turned out to be a nail-biter that lasted an hour and a half. Throughout this match, scores fluctuated, making it thrilling to watch, but ultimately, the Mounties claimed yet another victory, securing their second win of the day.
When it came to the singles portion of the match, the Warriors had an uphill battle, with only Jhanine Estigoy managing to score a point for El Camino. The Mounties, riding high on confidence after their earlier wins against Fullerton and Victor Valley College, dominated the matches. This win against El Camino marked their third consecutive victory.
Despite competing against a strong opponent, the El Camino Warriors remain determined and enthusiastic about learning and improving their skills. Most of the players on the team are considered to have intermediate-level tennis skills, having developed their interest in the sport through physical education tennis courses. Together, they share a common goal: to grow as players and tackle the challenges of the season head-on.
Looking ahead, the Warriors are gearing up for their next match, which is set against the Victor Valley College team on February 29, 2023, at 2 p.m.. With renewed determination and a drive to improve, this spirited team is prepared to hit the courts again in hopes of turning the tide in their favor.
