San Antonio is mourning the loss of a cherished artist, Elizabeth Rodriguez, who passed away on December 14, 2024, after bravely fighting advanced lung and brain cancer. She was just 56 years old. Known for her vibrant and captivating works, Rodriguez made a significant mark on the city’s arts scene, transforming her personal experiences and cultural heritage into stunning pieces of art that resonated deeply with the community.
Born and raised on the West Side of San Antonio, Rodriguez drew inspiration from the colorful murals that adorned her neighborhood. These vivid images and stories from her childhood laid the groundwork for her artistic journey. As a self-taught artist, she explored a plethora of mediums, including painting, mural-making, mosaic art, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, illustration, and photography. Her works were not just art; they were a celebration of San Antonio’s rich culture and history.
One of Rodriguez’s most iconic pieces, “Mesara,” showcased a waitress at Mi Tierra, a beloved Mexican restaurant located in the bustling Market Square of San Antonio. This work, along with various other commissioned pieces throughout the city, highlighted her ability to capture the essence of everyday life, often emphasizing the beauty in hard work and dedication.
Rodriguez collaborated frequently with her then-husband, Jesse Trevino, another prominent figure in San Antonio’s art community. Together, they created stunning works, including the large ceramic tile mural titled “Laredito,” which spans 50 by 8 feet at the Casa Navarro State Historic Site. Their partnership was a testament to their shared passion and vision for art that reflects the community.
In addition to her artistic pursuits, Rodriguez was a dedicated art instructor. She touched the lives of many aspiring artists, instilling in them a love for creativity and self-expression. Her impact extended beyond the classroom, as she participated in various art shows, including exhibitions at Texas A&M-San Antonio and Galería EVA, where she showcased her talent and unique perspective.
Earlier this year, in March 2024, Rodriguez held her last art exhibition, which explored themes related to sex work and women’s experiences. This bold thematic choice highlighted her commitment to discussing important societal issues through her art. Tragically, just a few months later, she was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer after experiencing chronic cough and headaches for over a year. The community rallied around her, organizing a benefit fundraiser on May 13, 2024, at Progreso Hall, raising substantial funds to assist with her medical expenses.
Elizabeth Rodriguez leaves behind a powerful legacy in the local arts scene. Her work emphasized themes of love, beauty, and recognition of those who often go uncelebrated. Plans for memorial services in January are underway as the community prepares to honor and remember this incredible artist and teacher who inspired so many. Though she may be gone, her artistic spirit and the impact of her work will continue to resonate throughout San Antonio for generations to come.
