CPS Energy Prepares for An Intense Summer
The city of San Antonio’s utility company, CPS Energy, is bracing for another ghastly summer season. Despite mild winter weather that didn’t pose serious reliability issues, the company is all set to handle the forthcoming scorching summer. However, concerns surrounding affordability continue to loom over the community.
‘All Set for the Hot Summer’
As the summer heat intensifies, CPS Energy is all geared up. The company’s CEO assures that all necessary systems and infrastructure are in place to handle the anticipated spike in demand. In response to the 75 days of debilitating triple-digit heat experienced last summer, the city’s primary energy provider has responded proactively by acquiring supplementary power sources.
Expanded Power Generation Capacity
To meet increased demand, CPS Energy has acquired three additional power plants. These acquisitions have significantly bolstered its power generation capacity by adding around 1,700 megawatts, sufficient to power an estimated 340,000 homes. However, this strategic investment was made viable as a result of a customer rate increase.
Striking a Balance Between Cost and Consumption
While working optimally to maintain reliability, CPS Energy is concurrently addressing the issue of affordability. The summer heat invariably leads to amplified energy consumption, raising the concern of high bills for customers. Approximately 76,000 San Antonians have pending bills, accruing to a hefty $88 million owed to CPS Energy.
Tackling Affordability Challenges
In response to the rate increase and to aid struggling customers, the company broadened its affordability discount program. It now caters to an additional 15,000 customers, rolling out essential support to those unable to keep up with the growing energy bills.
Beyond Heatwaves: Preparing for Extreme Weather Conditions
Adding to the heat, this year is also predicted to be an intense hurricane season. The company emphasizes the importance of conservation when supply and demand become strenuous. While reassuring residents of their preparations, the firm urged customers to practice efficient energy use to ensure continual power supply.
