Hey there, San Antonio! We’ve got some thrilling news that’s bound to get your boots tapping and your hearts racing. Broadway Street is back in action, and it’s about to be filled with even more southern charm—and we’re not just talking about the traffic!
A brand new live country music venue, La Honky Tonk, is set to open its doors by the end of 2024 at 909 Broadway Street. This lively spot is taking over the location of the former Augie’s BBQ, which sadly closed down earlier this year due to those pesky construction delays. But now that the dust has settled, the excitement is growing, and the owners are ready to rock!
La Honky Tonk isn’t just your run-of-the-mill country bar; it’s designed to celebrate women artists in the country music scene, featuring everyone from Carrie Underwood to the legendary Dolly Parton. Co-owner Richard Bocanegra shared his vision, saying, “We want to be able to target a broad demographic. We don’t just want to dedicate to new or older artists.”
Even though the building is still under construction, you can get a sneak peek of what’s to come with a front opening expected to have bar seating. And if you’re a morning person, you’ll love this—plans are in place to serve coffee during the day, turning La Honky Tonk into the go-to spot for your early caffeine fix.
The idea for this venue sprouted from co-owner James Gonzaba’s observation that downtown San Antonio was missing a place for authentic country music. “You kind of have to go to the outskirts, which we saw a great opportunity to fill the void here,” he explained. They want to bring that lively country spirit right to the heart of the city!
If you thought this was just another country bar, think again! La Honky Tonk will be a sister venue to El Honky Tonk on North Flores Street, which has a unique flair with a focus on male country artists and Spanish music. Picture the sounds of Vicente Fernández harmonizing with George Strait! It’s a true fiesta for your ears.
And hold onto your cowboy hats because one eye-catching feature will be a big, pink boot adorning the entrance of La Honky Tonk. “We think it’s going to be a landmark for Broadway,” Bocanegra said with a smile. Gonzaba added a playful note, saying they want to spark curiosity, asking, “What is all this pink? Why are there more cowboy hats walking down Broadway now?”
While the exact opening date hasn’t been set just yet, you can keep an eye on social media for the latest news and updates. San Antonio’s about to get a fresh infusion of country music, energy, and fun—right in your neighborhood!
So, whether you’re a lifelong country fan or just looking for a fun night out with friends, get ready to give a warm, Texan welcome to La Honky Tonk. It’s time to pull on those boots and get ready for some good old-fashioned country vibes.
Stay tuned for more updates, and who knows, you might just find yourself two-stepping into the newest country music hotspot in town!
