Exciting Leadership Change at VIA in San Antonio!
In a significant and exciting development for public transportation enthusiasts in San Antonio, the VIA Metropolitan Transit Board has announced some remarkable news! Jon Gary Herrera, a local guy with deep roots in the city, has been appointed as the new president and CEO of VIA Metropolitan Transit. He’ll officially step into this role starting January 4, 2025, taking the reins from veteran Jeffrey Arndt, who is retiring after a stellar 40-year career in the transportation sector, including 13 years leading VIA.
Meet Jon Gary Herrera!
For those who may not know, Jon is a proud San Antonio native, and he has been a vital part of VIA since 2017, where he held the title of senior vice president of Public Engagement. His experience in this role has been nothing short of impressive, having spearheaded the successful campaign in 2020 that secured additional funding for VIA’s ambitious Keep SA Moving plan. This plan is crucial for improving transit services in the area, and it’s clear that Herrera has been instrumental in advocating for the city’s transportation needs.
When he heard that he would be stepping into this new position, Herrera shared his excitement about leading VIA during this time of immense growth and innovation. “Our Board and longtime CEO have charted a path toward a more mobile future for our region,” he stated, clearly passionate about the future of public transit in San Antonio. “I’m proud to be part of that mission and vision and introduce new, innovative ways we can get there, together.”
A Historic Appointment
What makes this appointment even more special is the fact that Herrera will be the **first Latino president and CEO of VIA**! This is a groundbreaking moment for the agency, which serves the second-largest transit service area in Texas. His appointment represents a step forward in diversity and inclusivity within the leadership of local transit agencies.
Support from Within
Arndt has expressed great confidence in Herrera’s ability, praising his knowledge of the agency and the commitment he has shown to improving transit services. “Choosing from within the VIA family speaks to the strength of our leadership and the entire team, who together will continue to accomplish great things for the community we serve,” Arndt remarked. It’s this internal strength and dedication that will help propel the agency forward as it navigates the challenges it faces as one of Texas’ lowest-funded major transit agencies.
Looking Ahead
What’s on the horizon for VIA? Plenty! In 2025, the agency plans to break ground on the VIA Rapid Green Line. This advanced rapid transit corridor is designed to connect critical job centers, linking the San Antonio International Airport through downtown and into neighborhoods near some of the city’s historic missions. Plus, get ready! A second rapid transit line, which aims to connect the East and West sides of San Antonio, is already in the pipeline for construction in 2027!
This fall, they’ve also opened a fifth VIA Link zone in downtown, expanding on-demand transit options for residents and visitors alike. And if you think that’s all, think again! The much-anticipated Better Bus Plan is set to roll out next year, with a focus on enhancing service frequency and reliability, making public transport more efficient than ever!
Community Commitment
As Herrera steps into his new shoes, he’ll surely have the city’s best interests at heart. With a passion for improving public transportation and a deep local connection, the future looks bright for VIA and the communities it serves. This is indeed an exciting time for the agency and the residents of San Antonio! Here’s to wishing Jon Gary Herrera the best of luck in his new role—we can’t wait to see where he takes VIA next!
