San Marcos is buzzing with the energy of eager voters as early voting for the 2024 presidential election officially got underway. With only a few days into the early voting period, the turnout is already setting remarkable records, and it’s clear that locals are ready to cast their ballots in this crucial upcoming faceoff between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.
Just a week into the early voting period, the numbers are astonishing! By the end of the early voting period on Thursday, October 24, a whopping 192,104 voters had already visited the polling places. To put this into perspective, this figure represents about 32.3% of all early votes cast in the 2020 election and 40.4% of those who voted early in 2016. It’s amazing to see such enthusiasm from voters!
In Bexar County, things are particularly lively, with nearly 50,000 residents showing up each day. Officials believe this level of engagement could surpass previous election turnout records. Just to give you a broad view, the numbers for early votes on the first day of voting in this election year hit 47,000, which was a significant jump compared to 33,101 in 2020 and 53,431 in 2016.
However, with great turnout comes a little bit of congestion as many polling locations are seeing long lines winding around public buildings. Reports have come in of locals waiting several hours to have their say. It’s a time-consuming process, so if you’re planning to hit the polls soon, you might want to plan accordingly.
Bexar County Elections Administrator, Jacquelyn Callanen, expressed excitement over the turnout, stating, “We already have a 14.3% turnout. That’s amazing!” She pointed out that just halfway through the polling hours on Thursday, more than 25,000 early votes were cast. “In three-and-half days, we’ve had as many people vote as we have in some of our city and school elections and in our amendment elections. So, this is just the best,” she added.
For those trying to avoid long waits, it may be a good idea to steer clear of the top 10 busiest polling places concentrated mostly in the northern half of San Antonio. Typically, these spots have seen anywhere between 5,500 and nearly 8,000 votes cast by Friday afternoon. If you find yourself standing in a long line, it might be worth it to hold onto your place. Once you’re in line, you will be allowed to vote, even if the clock strikes closing time before you make it inside.
