San Antonio is buzzing with excitement as the North Texas Mean Green volleyball team prepares to kick off its second season in the American Athletic Conference! This Friday at 6 p.m., they’ll take on the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) in what promises to be a thrilling match at the Convocation Center, and fans can catch all the action live on ESPN+.
It’s a special match for a couple of reasons. First, it marks the 40th meeting between these two teams, making UTSA the third-most common opponent in the history of UNT volleyball. The history of this rivalry is rather intriguing, with the Mean Green trailing the series 17 wins to 22 losses. However, there’s light at the end of the tunnel, as UNT has shown remarkable strength in recent years, holding a 6-4 edge in the last 10 meetings. Over this period, they’ve won three out of four matches under the leadership of the talented coach, Kristee Porter.
Last season, the two teams had their share of ups and downs when they faced off in Denton. On October 13, 2023, UNT triumphed with a clean 3-0 victory, but just two days later, they fell in a nail-biter, losing 3-2. With this competitive backdrop, it’s clear that the stakes are high for both teams heading into Friday’s clash.
UNT has been putting in the hard work during their pre-season, wrapping up non-conference play with a mix of results. They faced off against the formidable No. 16 Florida and, unfortunately, experienced a tough 3-0 loss. However, they bounced back admirably against the Bulls of Buffalo, claiming a solid victory with a score of 3-0 in their next match.
Against Buffalo, the Mean Green showcased an impressive defensive performance, holding the Bulls to a negative hitting percentage of -0.010. That’s right – they made it tough for their opponents, recording double-digit team blocks, which emphasizes their strength in defense and teamwork. It’s clear that the team is building momentum as they head into conference play.
A highlight from the Sunshine Invitational was the performance of Payton Van Veen, who was recognized for her exceptional skills by being named to the weekly AAC Honor Roll. She led the Mean Green with an impressive 15 kills, four aces, and a total of 22 points during the event. So far this season, she ranks second on the team in both total blocks and aces while also placing third in kills and points. It’s safe to say she is one to watch as the season unfolds!
As the Mean Green prepare to go head-to-head with the Roadrunners, fans are surely feeling the excitement in the air. The atmosphere is expected to be electric at the Convocation Center, with supporters eager to cheer on their team. Both sides will be bringing their A-game, and it’s anyone’s match.
Mark your calendars for this Friday evening! Whether you’re at the game or watching from home, let’s rally behind the Mean Green as they aim to secure a vital victory against their conference rivals, UTSA. With the fierce competition and the season already heating up, it’s a fantastic time to be a volleyball fan in North Texas!
